Satellite pictures reveal massive Chinese nuclear submarine base, says PentagonBy DAVID GARDNER - More by this author »

Last updated at 18:30pm on 3rd May 2008

Photographs emerged last night that appeared to confirm fears in Washington that China is building a giant underground nuclear submarine base on a tropical island.

Pentagon chiefs are worried that the secret base near Sanya on China's Hainan Island - which the Miss World beauty contests - could threaten Asian countries and America's dominance in the region.

The satellite images reveal a substantial newly-built harbour which could hold a large of nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. ...

...They show vast tunnel entrances that are thought to lead to huge caverns capable of hiding up to 20 nuclear submarines from spy satellites...

...Jane's Intelligence Review says the base has implications "for China's control of the South China Sea and the strategically vital straits in the area, and underlines Beijing's desire to assert tighter control over this region"....

...U.S. Defence chiefs estimate China will have five of the 094 subs operational over the next two years, each capable of carrying twelve nuclear warheads.

Jane's said it would be "difficult to ignore" for America with the development coming so close to vital sea-lanes.

The secrecy around the build-up is likely to lead the U.S. to put more pressure on the Chinese to come clean with its plans and raises further questions about Beijing's relationship with the rest of the world in the run-up to the summer Olympics.

Wonder, if they have a Hainan Island 3 day/2 night add-on to the 'Whitey's Beijing Olympics 2008 Tour Package" with a bus tour down to the caves where they load the nukes?

(It's all about attempting to build legitimacy...

"You let me host 2008 Olympics, American Boy, and I love you Long time"

...a principally Godless culture, led by amoral Maoists, using the Olympics to stage a propoganda festival...to conceal their hidden agenda of military dominance over Asia, and military strength on a level they can intimidate the other Superpowers, including the U.S., now being led by gutless, spineless losers like Pelosi, Reid and (unfortunately), Bush...who strategize by daily pop-media whim and sentiment.)

FBI: China may use counterfeit Cisco routers to penetrate U.S. networks

An FBI presentation states that China has counterfeited Cisco Systems network routers and may be using the equipment to penetrate U.S. government and private sector computer networks...

...Among the purchasers of the fake equipment were the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center, U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center, U.S. Air Base at Spangdahelm, Germany, the Bonneville Power Administration, General Services Administration, and the defense contractor Raytheon, which makes key missile and weapons systems...

...Under a section titled “The Threat,” the FBI described the effort as “IT subversion/supply chain attack” that could “cause immediate or premature system failure during usage.”

The counterfeit equipment also could be used to “gain access to otherwise secure systems” and to “weaken cryptographic systems.”

The briefing slide said the Chinese information warfare efforts require “intimate access to target systems.”

More to discuss on the 26th...but here's my take...

China has quickly becoming our biggest espionage threat....and they are a military challenge...(we didn't think we'd remain the lone guy trying to be top, did we???)

In the Air Force (where my background is), they are seen as our closest competition for the skys (including space)...Their fighter force is good (and large) and they have been working real hard on defeating space-based force multipliers that give the U.S. a serious advantage...

They are also a threat on the Naval side, as T-Man's posts above indicate...I have little but open source stuff on the Naval side, but I know China is well within their sights...

Where China stops being a global threat, and is only a regional threat, is the fact they cannot project forces forward like the U.S. can. Our global mobility forces (both air and sea) are decades ahead of where China is today...

One interesting fact that dominates the discussion of China between me and the son is this....China is buying up all the paper the Bush administration is floating to pay for Iraq (yes, every time you hear about a supplemental budget to fund the war, it's "off-budget" or pure borrowing)

The Chinese could not afford to piss us off...they need us to repay that money...and it becomes our "Ace in the hole" is this whole thing...The Chinese have gone too far down the capitalist highway to walk away from us financially...

Now, all bets are off if we let them continue with the spying and stuff like plantingfake network routers...but I have confidence in the folks who are watching them (not necessarily the leadership, but the grunts)

BE AWARE OR BEWARE!!!!!!!

Only from CA's Leftislature...

SACRAMENTO
Senate OKs bill easing rules on Communists

The California Senate has voted to repeal Cold War-era laws designed to punish organizations and public employees who profess support for the Communist Party.

The legislation prompted a debate about whether communism remains a threat to the United States.
Sen. Alan Lowenthal says America won the Cold War and that it's time to move on.
It's called the "Friday Four O'Clock Fvcking". Our Leftislature's perfected this tech. Out here on the left coast, everytime the Leftislature is going to pass/enact a rule/law that will be met with overwhelming oppostion. They release it at 4p on Friday afternoon...the effective shut-down time for staff on Friday. By releasing it at 4p, it's released too late for the T.V. stations to include it in their 5p news broadcast, as they don't have enough time to do analysis and follow up. Ergo, it goes unreported by most media outlets. What outlets DO report on the action, however, wouldn't get to it until non-prime time, non-headline news, and ultimately, what 'few' people hear the news, generally cool off or forget about the action by Monday morning when the Leftislature opens for business again.
