Life aboard a submarine may soon get a little harder to take for thousands of sailors.
The Navy announced today a ban on smoking aboard submarines while they are deployed below the surface after medical testing showed non-smokers suffered effects of second-hand smoke. It will take effect by Dec. 31, 2010.
The new policy could chip away at the image of the hardened sailor who lights up after a hard day at sea, a portrayal made uber-cool by World War II-era movies.
Wow. I assumed that smoking was banned on subs going back about 20 years.

You would have thought so with all of the electronics on board.

Well, they probably weren't allowed to smoke everywhere. It was probably restricted to a couple of designated smoking areas.

That's what I was basing my comment on. When I was on floats between 1994-1996 we were allowed to smoke in 2 locations aboard ship. Both were outside.... On a sub, outside is in the "instant death" area.

Call me crazy, but I would guess being in a pressurized tube several hundred feet under the surface you might stop looking at fresh air as a commodity.

I am sure they would enjoy a ride on a sub.

Interesting. You sure about those dates, bobby? My ship went totally smokeless while out on cruise in '93. I'm pretty sure that it was the entire surface fleet that was required to go smokeless at that time.
