Congressman now says he heard slurs directed at Frank, not Cleaver

U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler is distancing himself from comments he made to the Times-News last month, stating he heard racial slurs yelled from a crowd of angry health care protesters outside the U.S. Capitol.

On March 20, black Democratic congressmen John Lewis, Andre Carson and Emanuel Cleaver said they heard the N-word as they walked to the Capitol to vote on health care. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., who is gay, said anti-homosexual epithets were yelled at him.

At that time, Shuler told the Times-News he was walking toward the Capitol with Cleaver when protesters began yelling racial epithets at Cleaver.

On Wednesday, Shuler told The Associated Press that he heard slurs against Frank, but not Cleaver.

Similar to Heath's "I never called the TVA to lobby for lake levels to be maintained that benefit ny Development Company.....well, i never called as a Congressman on the TVA Oversight Committee, but I did as a concerned citizen"..... :coffee:

Heath's up for reelection this fall. I'm looking for a viable third party candidate.

I don't know what it is about former athletes and getting into Congress is all about - success on the field doesn't always translate to success in office.

Damned Waynesville people.

The best thing I can say about Heath is that he isn't Charles Taylor. I think that's called damning with faint praise.

Hey, at least Taylor was pretty straightforward that he was a straight up Playa. Heath wants to shroud it in the old veil of christian decency and all.

I don't believe John Lewis has ever said he was called the "N-Word" while walking that day. I believe his response was "People say things."
