Actually, it's not because using the terms "straight" and "lesbian" are not associated with a conscious effort to avoid use of the term "homosexual" in order to control attitudes to some extent. And I see the term "homosexual" used more often than "heterosexual".
I wasn't really aware that many homosexuals were offended by the use of the term "homosexual". "Gay" is just used more often because it is shorter to spell, and has fewer syllables to pronounce.
