"South Park" often gets bleeped. But not usually like this.
On Wednesday, the conclusion of the two-part story involving the Prophet Mohammed was shown with a number of audio spots covered by bleeps and images hidden by a block reading "CENSORED." Though "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have had fun with censorship in the past - including in part one of the Mohammed story, which involved free speech issues - apparently this time much of the censorship came from Comedy Central itself.
"Comedy Central was responsible for the bleeps and not showing Mohammed in last night’s episode," a spokesperson for the network told CNN.
The first part of the episode, which aired April 14, attracted protest from an Islamic group, Revolution Muslim. The group posted an entry on its website that included a warning to Parker and Stone that they risked violent retribution after the episode included a satirical discussion about whether an image of the prophet could be shown. http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2010/04/22 ... y-central/

The saddest thing is that by censoring these images and sounds, they're only giving the Islamic fundamentalists more power.

That's what I don't understand about this. That point is so obvious, you would think the folks at Comedy Central would see it.

Old news: Religions bullying and threatening freedoms...
There's nothing confusing or new about what happened - it's as old as time...

If that is another effort to suggest that the problem is religion in general rather than Islam in particular,it's a crock. In today's context, there is no other religion they have to worry about like they have to worry about Islam. Had they insulted Christ or Buddah or some other iconic figure of some other religion it's very unlikely that they would be subject to death threats that they have to take seriously.
Acting as though it's just "religion" and not Islam in particular is absurd. Don't know if that's what you were doing but if you were....please. IN today's context there is no comparison...none...between the problem associated with Islam and problems associated with any other major religion.

Comedy Central "caved" because muslims really would kill somebody for doing what they did. LOTS of muslims too...not just a "radical fringe." It's not like insulting Christianity. If you insult Christianity, Christians might try to boycott your sponsers or something. Muslims will do their best to kill you. That's the reality and the Comedy Central people have to deal with reality.

I'll bring you back some Mo pictures the next time i'm in the Middle East and I'm dead serious about that too. They're not hard to find lol. Unfortunately the Muslims who voice their opinions the strongest are also the most radical hypocritical idiots, so this gives a terrible name to the religion. And there lies the problem in Islam, the radicals have the most voice and thus the power, and the normal ones (majority) haven't stood up to these radicals. Unfortunately, it's tough for the majority to have a voice, but the reasons is a whole different thread in itself. Hopefully things will change and Islam won't be looked down on, but for now I understand why non-Muslims would hate and/or fear it.

Don't try to reason with St. Onge on this (or any subject, for that matter). He's convinced that EVERY Muslim is hell bent on killing every non-Muslim alive. I guess that's what happens when you never leave the Bayou.

No, not EVERY Muslim. However, I think the oft repeated mantras about it being "a small minority," etc. are unsubstantiated and questionable. Suppose one could conduct a true scientific poll to represent the population of all of the Muslims on Earth consisting of one question:
"Do you think film makers who make films insulting the Prophet Muhammed should be killed?"
Are you really confident that "yes" would not be the answer given by the majority? At the very least, are you confident that there would not be a substantial proportion...certainly more than a "small minority"...that would answer "yes?"
My own belief is that a minority would answer "yes" but it would be a substantial proportion comprised of hundreds of millions of people. Also, I think it likely that a lot of people who really think "yes" would answer "no" to the poll question. In any case, there is no basis for that "only a tiny group of extremist" mantra that gets repeated over and over again in the name of political correctness.
I have to say, as I have in the past, that it reminds me of that "Mars Attacks" movie where people keep deluding themselves with respect to the intent of the invaders.

If I'd guesstimate, I'd say 20% (in the world...waaaaay lower in the US) would say yes, but I'd also say that 15% of those people are uneducated and poor and have been swept up by this new age Radical Islam movement that's convinced them this is the way to heaven. That said, there's also a huge difference between people saying something and actually doing it, as is the case in any type of murder.
Chizzang wrote:Islam has proven routinely it is the most dangerous religion in present times...
Kinda agree, but there really is a difference between proper Islam and Radical Islam, so I'm not sure it's fair to lump them up together. Islam has a lot of questions it needs answered from within, but it's a slippery slope when the Radical and proper Islam begin to get lumped up together, just like it's a slippery slope when people begin to lump up all Priests with pedophelia. For example, I had a young kid ask me if I was a terrorist when his mom asked me where my rather exotic name comes from. His mom apologized but she didn't have to, and I was certainly not mad at the kid or the parents, but that's the incident where it really hit me that people can get lumped together in situations they're not even involved in (as I'm an atheists and not a terrorist lol). Slippery slope...
ok, I really need to head off but I'd be glad to talk about the subject more in-depth later tonight.

Yes Grizall but let's be fair here. You said that was JSO's belief, JSO did not say that this was his belief. No sense linking that statement with him like that.
JSO said pretty much exactly what Jizzrag said but you didn't hint that you agreed with it when he said it.

Islam has some real problems of "over distribution" right now... the absolute dregs of the earth - or a Frantz Fanon would say "The Wretched of the Earth" in observance of post colonialism political structures now in complete disarray and swarming with destitute disenfranchised Muslims - you get "Fervor and rage" instead of reasoned enlightenment
in English: There's about 750 million dirt poor Muslims under broken political structures globally... that's a HUGE problem considering recent estimates have 25% of the global population being Islamic

On top of that unless shit changes in a hurry it will get worse in the future. Muslims are outpacing any other religious group and of course those of us that don't have the "answers" like the religious folk as far birth rates. With all thise poor, and pissed off Muslims flooding the market in the next 20-30 yrs. and beyond things are likely to change for Europe, America, and everyone else for that matter.

There are polls that might lend some insight such as the one you can see at http://pewglobal.org/reports/pdf/253.pdf;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which was released in 2006. It breaks things down by nation.
The following question was asked:
"Some people think that suicide bombing and other forms of violence against civilian targets are
justified in order to defend Islam from its enemies. Other people believe that, no matter what the
reason, this kind of violence is never justified. Do you personally feel that this kind of violence is
often justified to defend Islam, sometimes justified, rarely justified, or never justified?"
(see page 57 of the report)
Results were reported for 10 countries. Percentages of Muslims opining that suicide bombing and other forms of violence against civiliam targets are justified under at least some circumstances (often, sometimes, or rarely) ranged from 13% in Germany to 69% in Nigeria. 57% in Jordan and 53% in Egypt reported being in that range of opnion.
I am cautious about the reliability of the polling; even though I'm sure Pew did it's best. I think it's a difficult polling problem. Also, there's no way one can get an ubiased estimate overall world Muslim opinion by looking at things in terms of individual selected countries. But, clearly, there are a lot of Muslims out there who think that there are or could be circumstances under which suicide bombings and other forms of violence against civilian targets are justified by defense of Islam.
I think insulting Mohamed would fire even more emotion than just a general statement about "defense of Islam." Like, what if they made something along the lines of "The Last Temptation of Christ" with Mohamed being the subject instead of Jesus. Maybe a movie focusing on him marrying a nine year old girl as he's reported to have done (and before anybody even asks about it, it is unlikely that a nine year old girl has reached reproductive age so, yes, pedohphilia could be a factor in such a case). Let somebody make a movie depicting Mohamed as a pedophile then go out and poll Muslims on whether or not the producers of the film should be killed. I'd sure as heck be willing to bet that a very substantial percentage of Muslims would answer "yes" to that question.

Anybody in the business of "defending Islam" has a tough go of it...
Obviously I'm not interested in "defending " any religion as I believe each person should in effect have their own individual religion a "100% personal and private" relationship with God...
thus sparing the world endless controversy and violence
