I hope he has some other ideas to campaign on - he won't be long for the primaries if this is his line in the sand.

When I went to census training this week, they gave us a sheet that folded out three-wide that has the introduction to the census in 58 different languages.

While I can see what he's saying regarding English, he's going to be out a lot of federal funding if he's hard line about it. Plus he'll be executed once we all speak Chinese.

Very true. I was in Alabama this past weekend for the race. My yankee brother-in-law was with us. I had to interpret because he couldn't understand Southern.

For the life of me...
I cannot figure out why it matters what language somebody speaks in this country - we have no national language and we never have - and we probably never will...

If you don't want to hire somebody because they don't speak English or Spanish or whatever - fine I understand that
But Americans speak a whole bunch of different languages
English is simply the most common one, it's not the only one

English is simply the most common one, it's not the only one.
It's the most common one by a long, long shot. As of the 2000 Census 82% spoke only English in the home (http://usgovinfo.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi= ... kbr-29.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). 18 percent spoke a language other than English in the home but 55% of those reported that they also spoke English "Very well." So you're talking about over 90% of the population being proficient in English. No other language, including Spanish, is anywhere close to that in terms of proportion of the population being proficient in it.

We don't have an "official" language but we should. We should pick a language and encourage people who want to function in this society to learn it so that the largest proportion of the population proficient in a single language as possible is achieved. Having 100% of the population proficient in a single language would be the most efficient situation and that should be the goal even if it can never be achieved.

By "official" language I just mean that all government documents should be in English and if you want to understand them it's up to you to learn English. Also, if you call a government agency the information should be in English. There should be no option for accessing the information in other languages. If the idea is that failing to provide people information in whatever language they prefer isn't "fair," then "fairness" dictates that EVERYBODY have the option of access to the information in the language they prefer. That's obviously not practical. And there's no more objective reason to draw the line at English and Spanish than there is just to draw the line at English. If you're going to say it's OK to include only the two languages in most common useage it's OK to say include only the single language in most common usage; especially when around 90 percent or more of the population is proficient in it and number 2 is characterized by a proficiency rate of somewhere around 15%.

Such a stance would have the added benefit of making it more difficult on people from Mexico who are here in the country illegally. We should be making life in this country as miserable as we possibly can for those people so that there is less incentive for them to be here and it wouldn't hurt to make sure inability to speak English contributes to that.

We don't need a Quebec situation on our hands. We don't really need a Flemish/Walloon situation either.

Does it annoy anyone else when calling a US-based business, that you have to "press 1" for English?

This is the United States of America, we should not have to select the predominant language from a menu list; it should be the default language and all others should be menu- based selections.

Nothing earth shattering here, just annoying.

It's not just a matter of being lazy. The whole automated answering thing is annoying. I'd like it a lot better if when I called a business a human being answered the phone...in English by the way...and directed my call appropriately. I understand why it's done, but I personally would strongly consider giving my business to businesses who have human beings answer the phone (in English) rather than that automated crap if any businesses would still do that.

Alabama sucks. I wish that they would secede along with about 15 other states.
