War On Poverty: Another Donk Failure

On March 16, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty in the United States. He created large-scale national programs aimed at helping the poor and needy that consumed nearly 1.2 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). The programs were meant to be temporary, short-term investments. Instead they have become permanent fixtures in government programming and spawned the creation of dozens more programs over the years. Today, spending on welfare programs (adjusted for inflation) is 13 times greater than it was in 1964.

It is clear that President Obama is intent on not only continuing the failed war on poverty but expanding and growing the size of the welfare state. President Obama’s 2011 budget will increase spending on welfare programs by 42 percent over President Bush’s last year in office. Total spending on the welfare state (including state spending) will rise to $953 billion in 2011.

Further, the Obama Administration is pursuing a change in the official “poverty measure” that will increase the number of people considered poor in America. If future program eligibility is tied to this measure, the amount of federal tax dollars flowing to programs aimed at helping the poor would dramatically increase.
$953 billion to ensure another generation of donk voters with their snout in the trough.
The President’s 2011 budget requests that food stamps spending rise from $39 billion (already a record level) to $75 billion.[3] Obama’s 2011 budget also requests these expansions be made permanent. In addition, eligibility for this program was expanded in the infamous “stimulus” package. Within President Obama’s first year in office, food stamp rolls grew by over 5 million people—the single largest increase in a one-year period in over three decades.
5 million more reliable donk voters.
Unfortunately, only one of the 70 federal welfare programs, the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program, has work requirements for its recipients. The 69 others merely provide a basic need and allow families to stay on the welfare rolls indefinitely.
Congress should ask pointed questions about why the war on poverty continues to escalate more than four decades after it began. The Obama Administration’s expansion of the welfare state, in combination with its effort to define poverty up, does not bode well for economic freedom in the United States.
Perhaps we should be less concerned about the war in Afghanistan and more concerned about THIS one that's been raging for 40 years and in which we have made virtually NO progress. It's time for the liberals in this country to wake up and realize that some people are just going to be poor. No amount of cajoling, handouts, education, freebies, or incentives will make them "un-poor".

Imagine what we could do with $953 billion. :coffee: :coffee:

Amen. :notworthy:

As I have said on this forum (and AGS) for years now, the vast majority of the so-called "poor" live in that situation because of their own choosing...

There is an element of that... but, nowhere near "the vast majority."

If you're born poor... you are FAR more likely to live your life poor. If you are born wealthy... you are FAR more likely to live your entire life wealthy.

Are you stalking me AZ? Did you have the brown shirts hack my internetz usage?

Weird, I was reading about the failure of LBJ's "Great Society" this morning, then WHAM! The Heritage Foundation puts up a fair and balanced article! I blame you and your hippy baby boomer generation Z. :kisswink:

There is abuse in the welfare program, as Baldy has brought out, I've witnessed it recently with someone I know (a conservative too, not one of Z's 5 million donk voters). :ohno: But what do we do? Do we stop taking care of our fellow Americans all together? Do we ignore our needy while we spend billions helping foreign countries before we help out own? There's got to be a line in the sand somewhere, there's got to be a better way to do this.

Of course it is the "vast majority". If it weren't, the number of people living in "poverty" would have been drastically reduced since LBJ declared his ill conceived "war".

There is plenty of opportunity to prosper in this country, regardless of where you start from. The formula to success is pretty simple really:

a) Take advantage of all educational opportunities afforded you
b) Do not engage in criminal acts
c) Do not have children out of wedlock or before the age of 21
d) Do not abuse drugs or alcohol
e) Commit yourself to working as hard as you can and take pride in your professionalism and performance

If everybody did that there would be very little need for government assistance like welfare, section 8, and food stamps.

Another thing.... ALL governmental assistance like welfare, food stamps, section 8 housing, etc. should bring with it mandatory drug testing and birth control for all recipients.

Given the rate of unemployment, is 5 million more food stamp applicants unusual?

Perhaps not...

Y'all would be amazed and astonished but maybe not surprised given the national ethos these days by something I routinely encounter when in the process of hiring new originators...

Me: You will be 100% commission based on the plan in our personnel manual that I am giving you. You will sign the compensation agreement, acknowledgement of receipt of our policies and procedures and a w-4 form. I'll get you set up with an e-mail address, the required software, business cards and you can get right to work.

Prospective employee: I'd rather you not turn in that w-4 form until I have my first closing and am ready to draw my first paycheck.

Me: I'm sorry, but we do things by the book here and what you have asked me to do is illegal and unethical. If you are willing to ask me to cheat the government I think you will ask me to cheat my correspondents too. This isn't the place for you to work. I appreciate you coming in and good luck in your future endeavors.

I thought college students only qualified for loans and couldn't use other assistance like foodstamps and unemployment. I know they can use housing if the situation is right. It never made much sense to me. It would appear on the outside that if a college student is using fed. assistance while in school, they should in turn make more money when they graduate. As many on this board would point out the gov. likes people who make more money.

This reminds me of something my fiance told me recently. She hired a new employee, and the new employee was working with the company for about two months when my fiance got a call an unemployment office asking if the new employee had recently interviewed with her. Apparently the new employee was still claiming unemployment benefits and thought she'd gotten in good enough that my fiance wouldn't turn her in. Nuh uhhhhh

Hipsters aren't college kids, though many college kids portray the "hipster style." Hipsters do nothing, bitch about everything, hate everything except for that band you've probably never heard of (probably because the band is Shite) and they drink PBR!

Well.... I like PBR gosh dang it, and these punks are giving it a bad name! That beer has a blue ribbon for a reason and it's not because some do nothing waste of space is drinking it while eating out of a trashcan. Yes, I have actually seen that image last described.

AZ, he said Budweiser, not bud light. The difference is subtle, but there is a difference.

I knew a girl who's last name was Pabst (I think it was the same family).

When asked how to spell her last name she'd say "Pabst... like the beer not smear." :thumb:
