Deputy shot; illegal immigrants suspected

PHOENIX - A veteran sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded Friday after encountering a group of suspected illegal immigrants who apparently had been hauling bales of marijuana along a major smuggling corridor in the Arizona desert- a violent episode that comes amid a heated national debate over immigration.

State and federal law enforcement agencies deployed helicopters and scores of officers in pursuit of the suspects after the deputy was shot with an AK-47 on Friday afternoon, and the search continued into the night. Deputy Louie Puroll, 53, had a chunk of skin torn from just above his left kidney, but the wound was not serious. He was released Friday night from Casa Grande Regional Medical Center.

This is what the border security/state legislature/federal government needs to be concerned about - violent criminals that don't care about any laws, or anyone else.

Budget cuts have left many Counties understaffed - Pinal County sherriffs deputies used to ride double. Now they ride single, because that is all the county can afford. But that is what the local Republicans want - less government.

Remove all the unfunded federal mandates...return the money taken in federal taxes for stuff not constitutionally mandated as federal responsibilities...

Then the county can properly fund what it considers important...

Local governments making, and funding, local decisions...not Washington telling local governments what they must fund... :coffee:

And there would still have been one deputy on patrol. Pinal County based their revenue model on new home fees. They planned on paving the desert with homes. They lost the bet that growth would continue at the breakneck pace it did. They had no plan B, and refuse to raise local taxes back up to where it was before the growth spurt. PInal County has a very low tax rate - not high enough to sustain vital local services.

You neglected to address non-funded federal mandates that low tax rate still must fund...and the fact that if federal taxes were greatly reduced by the federal government not taxing us for services that are not federally mandated in the Constitution...then the local government would be able to tax for those services...

Its simple...the people of that county have set a limit on how much they will pay in total taxes...reduce the federal burden, and the local burden can rise to that limit...

Fu*k your stupid.

Lets try this, how about you get rid of all the money spent on welfare and then use it to buy more sheriffs? Your less government argument is so fu*ked and you dont even know what your talking about.

No Alpha - you are the one that is fucking stupid. Unless you deal with this mentality on a daily basis, you have no clue as to what you speak.

Can you quantify these unfunded mandates? And no Colonel, it wouldn't matter if they were all eliminated.

How so - it is the absolute truth. And it pains you to admit that we are closer politically than you are to the Republicans that run the House and Senate and most of local politics here in Arizona.

In no way, shape or form have Republicans EVER advocated for LESS protection. EVER. Oh, I'm sure you'll be able to go out and find some video of a fringe group seeking that, but local Republicans do NOT want less protection. The inability of Pinal (and other counties in AZ) is totally and completely due to a lack of revenue caused by a drop in sales tax collections (upon which a vast majority of AZ's budgets are based)....it has nothing to do with "wanting less government."

Beautiful deflection by jon. :thumb:
Totally gloss over the fact that the person who shot the deputy was an illegal and blame the incident on Republicans.

Also love the pixie dust type of remark how the feds should be concerned about the "violent criminals" crossing the border. Please share your wisdom with everyone...how do you tell the difference between a "violent" illegal and one who is just "looking for a better life for him and his family"???

You need to watch the DEA crime stats. Out here where marijuana dispensaries are popping up like Dominos Pizza, the Mexican Mafia has stepped up to the plate to control supply. In those areas, violent crime has skyrocketed and filtered into the suburbs. In SoCal and up through the Central Valley, drug related homicides and violence is setting records. The MM are unsophisticated wannabe's who shoot anyone who gets in their way, and don't hesitate to go head-to-head with local police.
From a Darwinist viewpoint, they're targeting mom-and-pop growers who were societal flotsam and jetsom anyway, so the survival of the fittest (or most violent) is playing out well.

Good news, though...

...Awnold has freed up space in our stellar prison system, so our incarceration "Rack Rate" will be more affordable when the economy recovers. :thumb:

I was on my way to Tuscon when this happened. I probably drove by a cluster of 50 HWY patrol cars on the side of the road near Casa Grande. When I got to my dirty, unkept hotel room (according to the hotel clerk, all the housekeeping had been attending protests the last few days. Go figure.) I flipped on the news and saw what happened. Terrible. :ohno:
