What D1B won't (can't) acknowledge is that demagogues like Gore actually inhibit progress and social evolution.

How long did that blowhard have the floor? I would've headed for the exits after about 5 minutes, even if I had a kid in the graduating class!

Agreed, but around Knoxville/Nashville, Gore is a beloved native son...kinda like the bastard stepchild you still allow to sit at the main table during the holidays. Know the area well...blood's thicker than integrity.

Well, I guess the "native son" schtick didn't wear well in Chattanooga or Memphis, because Gore lost his home state in '00 and it cost him the election!

I thought, "What University would let AZ give a Commencement Speech? Liberty?" But this thread makes much more sense now.

Politicians from Tennessee are worthless.

No question that we have environmental issues to contest that should have light shed on them, but....

Gore needs to walk the talk - years of jetting around on private planes to talk about conservation seems a bit hypocritical to me.
Lumping much of the world's ills under the global warming umbrella seems to be a blatant attempt at furthering his personal agenda of selling books.

Plus, he's Captain Buzzkill If I'm a new graduate and have been hearing all the economic gloom and doom for my last couple of years, I likely would want to hear something moderately uplifting to give me some hope about the future (both personal and worldwide). Hearing an hour of the Book of Revelation delivered in a monotone doesn't really pump me up about going out into the world...

Probably the biggest damage Gore has done is to further politicize environmental issues. He drove a wedge into the global warming issue by basically saying his way or the highway, and condescendingly rejecting any discussion on the issue out side his sphere of influence. He's a power freak that wants to be King.
