Marine scientists have discovered a massive new plume of what they believe to be oil deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico, stretching 22 miles from the leaking wellhead northeast toward Mobile Bay, Alabama.
The discovery by researchers on the University of South Florida College of Marine Science's Weatherbird II vessel is the second significant undersea plume recorded since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20.
David Hollander, associate professor of chemical oceanography at the school, says the thick plume was detected just beneath the surface down to about 3,300 feet. He says it's more than 6 miles wide.
Scientists say they are worried the undersea plumes may be from chemical dispersants used to break up the oil a mile under the surface.

Did you read the article?
The discovery was important, he said, because it confirmed that the substance found in the water was not naturally occurring and that the plume was at its highest concentration in deeper waters. The researchers will use further testing to determine whether the hydrocarbons they found are the result of dispersants or the emulsification of oil as it traveled away from the well.]/quote]

So if it is oil, oil is not a naturally occuring substance???

Long term effects of spills is debatable. Short term is bad, long term we don't know.

I feel much better being reassured by somebody who has taken a class.

I thought the Obama family vacation was to start this weekend in Chicago, not the Gulf today?
These PR guys are really good. Mark Sanford could have used some of their skills when seeing his friend in Argentina....

Slobama will take care of it from his Chicago vacation home.

He's going to the Gulf in the morning.

He is also expected to personally crimp the pipe himself.

Huh? I thought everyone around here wanted LESS government? Isn't this just a private enterprise operation that's just had a minor snafu?
Can't find the 'dripping sarcasm' smiley....

Triple snap.
Heck, more oil than this leaks into the ocean on its own every year than this minor inconvenience but listen to our rugged individuals call for help from the guvmint.
