I would ask Rosie O'Donnell to sacrifice herself for the good of the gulf. EIther stick her mouth over the pipe or stick her fat ass in it.

Wouldn't do a damn thing about the leak in the Gulf, but would certainly knock it off the front pages...

What a dumb question. Like any of us have the engineering expertise to offer up a realistic solution.

But a company that makes hundreds of billions of $$$ sure should have had a clue how to fix something like this before they started drilling. :thumb:

They really did, with an 80% success rate. They claim little environmental effects too because the soil simply absorbs the detonation and the "explosion pushes the rock, presses it and actually squeezes the channel well." That said, I'm not sure if I completely trust Russian information regarding environmental effects. But they did have some pretty smart engineers and scientists, and it's not like the oil spill hasn't caused a ridiculous amount of damage already. At this point, the effects of a nuclear blast is probably a drop in the bucket compared to the crap that's spilled out...right comrades?*

*I actually have no idea what the effects of a nuclear blast would be compared to the oil spill.

I don't have any information as to the affects either but i did hear that they have stopped oil leaks like this on 4 or 5 different occasions by nuking them.

I'm no engineer, but one would think that there is SOME kind of inflatable device that they could insert into the pipe and then inflate to stop the flow. I realize the oil is coming out at a very high pressure (has to be, to be pumping out against the massive pressure of the ocean on top of it) but there's got to be a way to get the flow stopped long enough to get a new valve on the end of the pipe. I'm envisioning a much larger version of a device we used on my swimming pool to unplug one of the recirc lines....we inserted a device into one of the recirc holes, attached it to a garden hose, and turned on the water. It inflated the device inside the pipe, creating an airtight seal, then caused back-pressure against the clog and blew it out another opening. The back-pressure was possible because of a small opening in the upstream end of the device. Obviously in this use you would NOT want that hole, but would want a complete seal.

Another option would be inserting something into the pipe (once there's a clean opening on the end) that is expandable and uses the pressure of the oil itself to either inflate or expand and uses the oil's pressure against itself to change shape and adhere to the pipe walls. Similar to the way a curved dam uses the pressure of the water against it's base to actually make it STRONGER. In this example, the more pressure exerted by the oil on the underside of the device, the harder it adheres to the well walls.

It would seem to me that SOMETHING like these have got to exist, and really, what's the harm in trying just about anything at this point?

Any idea about exactly WHAT the pressure is on the end of that pipe?

Is AZ a genius? This plan sounds similar to what a 21 yr old, Long Island "genius" came up with.

I can plug oil leak, says NY genius
Listen up, BP! Here's LI prodigy's ingenious plan to seal the gap

BP's engineers can't stop the gushing oil spill, but a young genius from Long Island says she found the solution in less time than it takes most people to finish a crossword puzzle.

Since the "top kill," "junk shot" and "top hat" techniques failed to end the environmental nightmare, Alia Sabur -- who started her engineering Ph.D. at age 14 -- is pushing for a more radical idea.

The Northport native, who started reading before she could walk and who at 18 broke a 300-year-old record to become the youngest-ever college professor, proposes surrounding a pipe with deflated automobile tires, inserting it into the leaking riser, and then inflating the wheels to form a seal.
