Maybe there is a benevolent god? The American Southeast/Gulf States is without a doubt the anus of the worlld - full of racist, violent, stupid low brow motherfuckers who essentially elected assholes like the Bush's and Reagan. They got what they deserve.

I hope they never recover and I hope the spill ravages Florida and Texas more in the future. Fuck nuking Iran or N. Korea. We could solve alot of the world's problems by wiping Florida and Texas off the face of the earth.

We're going to be fine. We've enjoyed the economic benefits of being in an oil rich region for many decades. Now one of the risks have been realized and it'll tweak us some. But we'll be fine.

Georgia is tolerable in my book. The rest can go to hell.

Since I know you like to fish, I must assume you either never went fishing in Louisiana or else didn't go with someone who knew what to do. The fishing in Louisiana is much, MUCH better than the fishing in Georgia. Not that the fishing in Georgia is bad. But I lived in Georgia for five years and the thing I missed MOST when I was living there was the fishing in Louisiana. Even now it's great. Lots of places you can't go now because of conservative closures to all fishing due to the oil spill. But if you could go to them you'd still catch fish as long as you stay away from the patchy oil. And, no, they won't be contaminated for various reasons including the fact that they just move out of the way because they have plenty of space to do that.

Plus there are still plenty of open waters. And there's the inland fishing; which is also great.

BTW, I've been through all the NOAA Mussel Watch data in detail as part of my job. If you're thinking you have to worry about contaminated fish and shellfish under normal circumstances in Louisiana, you are mistaken. There is much more of a problem in other areas such as, for example, the Great Lakes region. Not that you have to really worry about fish from the Great Lakes either. Yeah, you'll read some stuff that might scare you but levels of concern are based on unrealistic assumptions like people eating something like 10 pounds of fish tissue per month for five years straight or even for 70 years.

I'm sure there will be some short term elevations in PAH levels in oysters and crustaceans in Louisiana waters impacted by the oil spill. They are unlikely to reach levels high enough to be a real threat to human health. I know that because I know they have rarely reached such levels in association with previous oil spills such as Exxon Valdez, etc., even in the most heavily oiled areas. And the levels I'm talking about are conservative to begin with because, as noted, they assume people eat way more seafood over time than they really do.

Would populations of mussels be the best gauge to the overall effect of the oil spill? Don't mussels live burrowed in mud?

Also, what do you do for a living (if you don't mind me asking)? It will be rich with irony if you turn out to work for some government agency.
