I wonder how many private industry jobs in areas like DC and other local capital cities are there only because of their interaction with government?

I know in Albany there are a lot of law firms and lobbying firms that wouldn't otherwise exist or have offices in that area if the state government wasn't there.

All but about 10 states are in the 13 to 16% range. Pretty close actually. DC being the lowest should surprise anyone since most of the people that work for DC are probably federal employees.

And all the top ten (except for NY) are in some of the least populated states.

Who all have either large state parks or military bases in their states. I would think thats what makes their numbers higher.

State/local government jobs are not tied to the military...

I was surprised too until I thought about it for a moment and realized that most workers in DC live in VA and MD burbs, not in the district per se.

Mississippi is nowhere near the least populated state, nor is Kansas...

Well truthfully, if we are going to have a lot of public sector workers they should be at the state level :nod: And as long we can pay for them unlike New Jersey, California, New York and Illinois, doesn't seem to be a big problem.

It never ceasess to amaze me when I see that that more people live in Baltimore City/County than entire states. :shock:

Does this include teachers? They are usually considered local govt employees as school districts are a form of local govt.

has to include teachers. I know in SC school districts are typically the largest employers along with hospitals being a close second. Which, of course is another interesting question. What is the percentage of public versus private hospitals. In Greenville it is not even close. Public hospitals swamp private ones.

a good questions would be how is the National Guard counted?

It amazes me that I live in a county without one single city that would rank above 6 states in terms of population.

North Dakota does have a good number of state colleges, a state owned bank and a state mill and elevator, lots of parks, some large indian reservations and a good student to teacher ratio in most schools.

There are probably hundreds and hundreds of counties without a single city that rould rank about 6 states in terms of population.
