Obama's Oil Spill Speech is Pissing Me Off

Post by SunCoastBlueHen »

I voted for the dude, but this speach is nothing but empty political rhetoric. Don't try to convince me that I should like you right now. B.O, or try to convince me of proactive shit you are doing, convince me you're going to take care of the people affected. Don't "pray" for these people - help them.

I wasn't going to start a thread on how bad that speech was but since you did: That was bad. Like the part about China being ahead of us in "Green" energy. Please.

Personally, I was really offended by the obvious effort to exploit the problem with the oil spill to advance his pre-existing agenda.

And I'll go ahead and say it: The effects of this spill on the actual environment aren't near as bad as the media impression with respect to them is. I follow it every day. It's not going to be the end of the Gulf world. Now, in the short term it is hurting people economically because people are staying away from beach towns and fisheries are being closed when there really isn't any health hazard to consumers of seafood. But the environment itself isn't being seriously damaged in terms of actual biological productivity.

Of course the "conservative" side is a little guilty of exaggerating the effects as well in their efforts to crticize Obama.

I'm by no means a fan of BHO but even with my low level of expectations, I can honestly say that was the most pointless presidential address I've ever seen.

More rhetoric with no evidence that he has the capacity to take command of the gulf crisis.

I sincerely want him and everyone involved to be successful in handling this crisis as there is far too much at stake but I haven't seen any indication that our commander in chief has the capability to do so.

I didn't watch the speech (that's the correct spelling SCBH, btw ;) ), but my benefit-of-the-doubt points toward Obama are all used up. The guy has been a phenomenal disappointment. I have a first term vote for Dubya Bush and for Obama to put in my hall of shame.

Ok. I've been making a sincere effort not to just throw darts at Obama at every turn. But I'll go ahead and let out some steam. The difference between you voting for Bush and you voting for Obama is that Bush had executive experience running a very large State. To any reasonable person, it should have been obvious that Obama did not have the experience to be President.

That's not why I voted against him. I voted against him because of his philosophical orientation. And I will admit that I consider underlhing philosophy more than relevant experience. But this was like electing a little kid to be President. It really was.

I'm not overly involved in politics but to my untrained ear/eye the only feeling I've every gotten in empty words with no real plan in place other than to say something to buy him time to have his writers from up with another "catchy" thing to say to keep his supporters blindly following him.

I didn't put much stock in it. There hasn't been a Presidential evening address of true substance at least since the Fireside Chats (if ever). It was pure political grandstanding and personal defense. It stank of damage control. But such things ALWAYS do, be it a Donkey President or an Elephant President. The only Democrat I've ever heard tell the truth is in the CA Assembly, and the only Republican I've ever heard completely tell the truth hasn't made it to the White House yet. It will probably remain so for quite a while....

There's been several important and substantial addresses from the Oval Office over the years; GW's Sept. 11 address, RR's Challenger speech, LBJ's Vietnam, JFK's Cuban Missile Crisis and Civil Rights addresses, etc.

An address from the Oval Office in and of itself raises the level of expectation of the speech and message. This address fell short in many ways. It reminds me a bit of the address GHW Bush gave on crime where he held up a bag of crack that 'confiscated across the street from the White House' (I'm paraphrasing). That address, much like this one will likely be, is remembered for all the wrong reasons and was an early indication that GHW Bush simply wasn't up to the job.

I can't remember a Presidential speech that didn't sound like BS. Bush after 9/11 was the most sincere, then it went downhill.

Well, we knew (you can go back and search my posts on AGS from Sep/Oct/Nov 2008) that whomever inherited Bush's shit sandwich would not be very popular at this point in their first term. That being said, there's now been enough new issues put on Obama's plate to see that he's not the answer. I doubt McCain would have been either, and if he had croaked by now, Lord help us if Palin were in charge.

Palin was the sole reason I could not bring myself to vote for McCain. Not that McCain was the answer either but without Palin, I would have given him the benefit of the doubt.

True enough, but Obama is not merely unpopular. His policy prescriptions are dreadfully wrong. Moreover, he and his entire entourage are historically incompetent. Not only has Obama not been the answer, he is an incredible problem.

McCain would have clearly avoided the excesses of Obama. If Palin had taken over she would at least have a bunch of smarter, more experienced non-communists in the cabinet.

And perhaps the dumbest and most anti-american quote in the history of american politics. :ohno:

I didn't listen to Obama's speech but will take everyone's word that it was bad.

That being said and given the deregulation and overall political power of the oil industry and the inability of the government to fix the problem, his only positive political tact in this event was to completely throw BP under the bus and tell them to clean up their mess. His luke warm chastising will cost him. :coffee:
