Welfare Debit Cards Being Used in CA Casinos...

California welfare recipients are able to use state-issued debit cards to withdraw cash on gaming floors in more than half of the casinos in the state, a Los Angeles Times review of records found.
The cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms, the review found.
State officials said they were working to determine how much money had been withdrawn from casino ATMs by people using the welfare debit cards.

Yeah, heard about this on NPR this a.m. What maroon thought this was a good idea?
Hey, let's give poor people an ATM card with cash on it, because we know they would never withdraw that money and use it for something frivolous instead of to buy food for their kids, right?

Food stamps are "cruel" because the people who need them are embarrassed about needing them.
And here I thought one of the first things a person needed for improvement was to accept their situation, buck up to the embarrassment of whatever the issue is, and then move forward and make real changes in their lives so they can get back on their feet.
Then again, we've seen what "change" means for some people.

We gave Lloyd Blankfein and Co. billions to "help them out for the greater good" just like the folks on welfare. Instead of food, they were supposed to use that money to provide loans and capital. Instead, they went right back to the casino and inserted our welfare card.
You've given some lip service in the past to disagreeing with the bailouts. You're just as outraged by that corruption right?

How many times have the big banks had to be bailed out? A lot of people like this (and note that I say a lot but not all) are always going to be poor and are constantly going to be in dire straights financially. If you gave them a check for $100,000 they'd be penniless in a few months. This reality was clearly ignored when this brilliant idea of debit cards was started.

I don't recall ever supporting bank bailouts. I think I have always been squarely in the "let them fail" camp.
Same as social welfare.

How much more clearly could I possibly have been over the past 18 months that I was totally, completely, 100% against any and all forms of bailout or stimulus. This includes the amateurish stimulus checks sent out by GW, it includes money given to banks, AIG, GM, etc., it includes the $800 billion stimulus wet dream of Obama's.
None. Zip. NADA. Let me keep my fucking money, and let those companies that aren't run effectively and efficiently FAIL.

Hell, withdrawing the cash and immediately putting back into the economy while they're still hungry and will eventually buy food... might be a good plan.
