Boehner: GOP Congress Will Work TO Move Retirement Age To 70

A Republican-held Congress might look to raise the retirement age to 70, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) suggested Monday.
Boehner, the top Republican lawmaker in the House, said raising the retirement age by five years, indexing benefits to the rate of inflation and means-testing benefits would make the massive entitlement program more solvent.
"We're all living a lot longer than anyone ever expected," Boehner said in a meeting with the editors of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "And I think that raising the retirement age — going out 20 years, so you're not affecting anyone close to retirement — and eventually getting the retirement age to 70 is a step that needs to be taken."

Isn't the full retirement age already 67 for most of us? So that is only a 3 year increase not 5.
And adding means testing, so if I save for my own retirement so I can live well during my retirement I still pay in to SS and get nothing. But if I don't save and spend it now the government will take care of me.
Privatize it!

Agreed - there's at least an idea to start pulling in the spending reins a little bit. Certainly a step in the right direction.

Is Travis moving to the right a little bit here the last couple of days? I've seen him post a couple of good things from the conservative side and I'm quite confused.

I think that it should be 80. Make most people work so they never see any benefits......then we can get rid of Social Security (and those taxes associated with it) for good!

Anybody who's really relying on Social Security in the first place is probably working until they're in a home or dead anyway - is anyone really retiring anymore on just Social Security?

Each retirement estimate I do has no Social Security in it...
If I get it...that's pocket money...if I don't...Oh well...

I'm putting off receiving any SS for as long as I can, anyway. I'd support this move.

Sucks, but we have no choice. If we had taken all the surplusses of the system over the years and wisely invested them in the stock market and other non-government sectors, then SS would have something of actual value and SS could weather the storm with less drastic changes. Instead, the SS trust fund is nothing but a bunch of IOUs from a government already up to debt up to it's armpits with no end in sight.
If I had my way, all of the douchebag elite congresscritters that fought sensible use of the SS trust fund would be forced to take every penny of their massive fortunes out of whereever they are and placed into treasury bonds. If it's good enough for the plebian's SS, its good enough for their personal fortunes.

Exactly. Just up the age to 80 and be done with it!

I'm OK with SS being completely done away with as long as the government writes me a check for every penny I ever contributed to it plus some token interest.

Boehner is an idiot anyways, but if you're in favor of this ridiculous, massive, entitlement program I guess you don't have a choice.
Can we please just end Social Security? Government should not be involved in retirement plans. We need to pick a point to cut it off (born after 1980 for instance--I was born in 1981), from now on you don't pay in and you get nothing back. Everyone born before 1980 continue to pay in and will get their benefits.
Don't privatize it, eliminate it.

I would like the option to drop out...
I was born is 1964 and have paid a staggering lump of cash into that ridiculous pipe dream
If I could drop out today with no chance of getting any SS but never to be charged again I'd do it in a minute...

+2.

Social Security is nothing more than a legalized Ponzi scheme. If anyone on this board tried to set up something similar we'd be thrown in jail.

How many of these low life old timers that were crappy enough with their personal finances to have to rely upon social security would be forced back to work to offset the loss? Would that increase the labor pool and increase unemployment?
Just think of all the ol' timers employed by Walmart, checking receipts. They're already stealing jobs from able bodied young people who will never get their contributions back.

You're being much too kind, native.
Contributions?
Let's not be fooled. Social Security is a highly regressive tax with a horribly distributed subsidy.

Eliminating Social Security is a bad idea, I'd be unemployed
(Ok, so I don't technically work for SSA, I work for a state agency that makes medical determinations on eligibility for SSDI/SSI disability benefits)
