Pat Buchanan's latest article about why China is quickly outpacing us (and the rest of the world industrially and economically.

The bottom line I think is simple: China places China first. Period. Is there another explanation?

China has figured out before we have that today war is waged economically.



Like making money off of loaning us money to chase goat herders through the mountains half way around the world. The must be in Beijing.

Those are contributing factors, but remember that the Chinese population is, by and large, very poor. Right now, China is out-stripping the rest of the world with both hands tied behind their backs.

Once the middle class makes up more than 50% of their society, watch out.

However, nobody can deny that China does nothing that is not in their interests. They place China first, and all other concerns are secondary. If we behaved like China, there would be no humanitarian aid, no overseas development assistance (that does not at least benefit the bankrollers somehow), no massive disaster assistance to places like Thailand or Haiti. We would have capped that well in the Gulf and would already have three more running in its place. The Gulf Coast fishermen would just have to make do.

We have a clumsy hand sometimes, but replace the US with China on the world stage and the world is going to be a much harder place.

They can't sustain present economic growth forever and when they slow down it will be the Chinese who need to look out for their middle class, who will by that time have expectations not only of a better life for them and their children in China, but a textbook example, the US, of what happens to a country when the middle class starts losing ground to the rich. Now, as that middle class expands, labor will eventually be cheaper somewhere else and that will be interesting.

The middle class will protest, but they will not rise up in the same way that Americans or Brits would under similar circumstances. By the time their middle class reaches a critical mass they will have already buried the rest of us. Plus, even if they could have a popular middle class uprising, the Chinese government will create enemies to fight to placate them. Wonder who those enemies might be?

Americans are doing precious little rising up about the shrinking of the middle-class and the continuing erosion of their civil liberties; that isn't likely to change, sad to say about the country I love. Obviously the Chinese government, like governments everywhere, will need "external threats" at some point. Tibet is nearby so you don't have to have the troops minds poisoned by western bourgeoisie counter-revolutionary thinking, plus they're unable to fight back militarily, and Tibet would make a nice buffer against those expansionist Indians who wouldn't mind a little extra lebensraum of their own.

The best way to attack the Chinese government would be to provide an unbreakable wireless connection to the whole country that any computer in China could access anytime without obstruction. Probably be cheaper than the LHC to do......

Absolutely...the more open communication we have, the less likely the growing middle class would support aggressive actions...

Two perfect examples of this are Iran and North Korea...in Iran, the citizens, especially the developing middle class, have had lots of access to the west...twitter is big...the internet...satellite TV...and you can see the growing discontent with the religiously-based over-bearing government...Iran is moving towards internal revolution...

North Korea, on the other hand, still has an iron fisted clamp on outside communications...no internet (except for the few in the ruling class)...total state-control of all media...which allows the government to blame all the suffering on outside forces...

I'm going to start a separate thread on a perfect example of how the Chinese view the U.S.A. today as communications opens more and more...

China may be "kicking everybody's butt" but at what cost? They are the greatest violator of human and civil rights on the planet when it comes to their citizens. It disgusts me how our nation has sold our very soul to these ruthless communists. It kills me to hear the GOP call Obama a communist. Whatever........look to Beijing if you want to see what real socialism is all about. God help us against these people, God bless our President and God bless America!

Americans sure have a nasty habit of throwing around hyperbole when they don't agree with someone/something.

Also, they aren't waging wars half way around the world that they can't afford, and they don't have military bases that exist solely for other countries that just spit in their face on the national stage.

Also, they aren't waging wars half way around the world that they can't afford, and they don't have military bases that exist solely for other countries that just spit in their face on the national stage.

When their economic interests are threatened by a lack of security in places like Iran they will be. I know you don't like America's behavior Pwns, but no world power has ever resisted the interventionist urge when the money train is threatened.
