Warmest June on record:

Post by Skjellyfetti »

Last month was the warmest June on record worldwide, according to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Warmer-than-average conditions were present across nearly all continents, including much of the United States, according to the organization's State of the Climate report, released Friday.

Although global sea surface temperatures ranked the fourth-warmest on record, the combination of land and sea anomalies pushed June 2010 past June 2005, previously the warmest June on record, the report said. June was also the fourth consecutive month in a row of record warmth worldwide.

Meanwhile, wetter-than-average conditions were present in southern India, southern China, southern Europe and the U.S. Midwest, the report said. In contrast, southwest Australia is experiencing record-setting rainfall deficiencies, with the lowest rainfall on record for the first half of the year, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The Bureau reported that all states and territories in Australia experienced drier-than-average conditions in June.

June also marked a record low in Arctic sea ice -- the 19th June in a row the sea ice has been below average.

"This is important, because sea ice reflects incoming solar radiation back to space," said CNN Meteorologist Taylor Ward. "Without the normal extent of sea ice in the Arctic, we can expect more radiation to be absorbed into the ocean, leading to more melting. It's what we call a 'positive feedback.'" The amount of sea ice in the Arctic has been steadily declining since 1990.

Warmer-than-average temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, also known as El Nino, have been contributing to the warmth. La Nina conditions -- cooler-than-average temperatures in the same region -- are beginning to set in, which could prevent more monthly records from being set. However, La Nina combined with record-setting warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures is expected to fuel an active Atlantic hurricane season.

The announcement of June's record-setting warmth comes during a period of extreme heat in the United States and Europe. Excessive heat warnings have been topping weather headlines in the United States for more than two weeks now, and Europe has been shattering temperature records as well, with a heat wave through the first half of July. Eastern Europe has seen the most significant temperatures, although much of the continent has experienced above-average heat.

I think Statistics are the only thing you need in this situation w/average temperatures being higher now than they have in the past.

You have to love the red neck Pubs who don't believe in global warming, even though the vast majority of scientists do. You know damn well if Dick Chaney championed the GW campaign, these rubes would be all over it.

The Sac-Joaquin Valley was generally BELOW average for most of June.

No excessive warming going on here....

Actually, there is a fair amount of data indicating that the globe has been undergoing a slight cooling since 1998. Even if it has been warming, you have to consider that a disproportionately large number of sensors used to record temperature are placed in urban areas. You also have to consider that every planet in the solar system is warming at approximately the same rate as the Big Blue Marble. Not only is there some doubt that warming is currently taking place, but there is considerable doubt about the degree of warming and its causes. But if Al Gore says the debate is over, then I guess the debate is over.

You ain't real good at understanding what is being said here are eagleskins?

I have yet to see one person on here say that it is not happening. As Gil said, it's always getting warmer, or cooler...just in the last 40 yrs. the Politicians have found a way to make money off it so now it's a big deal.

We do know damn well that if Dick Cheney championed the cause that Repubs would follow it because we have proof that fucking Liberal's and their panty waste mentality followed the fucking lying, piece of shit Gore. Both groups are a bunch of fucking lemmings so don't use what they do as proof when your group follows along in recore #'s.

YT is right. I don't think many disagree that the earth may be warming. It's the "caused by humans" hysterics that most don't agree with.

Frankly, for me though, my skepticism is around two things - 1) we still have a pretty limited idea of how the world works and how climate is affected and how it affects things (just look at the most recent massive contraction of the thermosphere - no one has a clue why it did what it did) and 2) even if the Earth is warming (and I think it is) the remedies for correcting it are both so unrealistic (we'll never be able to do what's recommended) and are so unimpactful (i.e. we'll go through the pain of reducing our carbon footprint only to find out that it is massively short of what's required to reverse climate change) that it just seems misguided and irresponsible to advocate remedies that require significant sacrifice that won't work anyway. Better to spend our time working on how to live in a warmer world while also doing everything that is reasonable to limit our impact on the environment, especially in the shortterm (i.e. let's really get serious about nuclear energy and freeing that up).

Who says the earth is warming?????

If it is...why do we have below normal months...from the Feb 2010 report for DC area...

Unless we're just an anomoly... :coffee:
Subnormal temperatures were observed throughout the area with negative departures of – 3.9oF at DCA and IAD, and -4.6oF at
BWI. Readings were consistently cold. BWI's monthly maximum of 46oF was its coldest ever; DCA tied with 1934 for coldest and IAD observed its
chilliest monthly maximum since 1969. BWI and IAD recorded 5 days with subfreezing highs and DCA observed 3. Minimum readings at DCA were
below freezing the first 17 days of the month and on all but 3 days at IAD and 4 days at BWI
. The month's coldest readings occurred on the 1st and 7th
when temperatures dropped into the single digits in some suburban locations, including 6oF on the 1st and 7oF on the 7th at IAD.

And above normal months...June...

Nothing like using the stats you want...and ignoring the ones you don't want... :coffee:

2 months of below average temperatures doesn't offset the general trend.
