Initial requests for jobless benefits rose last week to their highest level since April, a sign that hiring remains weak and some companies are still cutting workers.
The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for unemployment insurance rose by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 479,000. Analysts had expected a small drop. Claims have risen twice in the past three weeks.
"The very unyielding flow of layoffs now clearly evident discourages any thought that employers are more comfortable with the size of their staffs," Pierre Ellis, an economist at Decision Economics, wrote in a note to clients.
Americans are spending cautiously as they save more and pay down debt. Home sales and construction have slumped after a popular homebuyers' tax credit expired on April 30. The impact of the federal government's stimulus efforts is fading.

I would go sailing in the North Sea. I hear it is an amazing place. I tried to find it on a map and I couldn't. I think it may be near Zaire or maybe Mozambique.

I think it's a good thing that Americans are spending more cautiously as they save and pay down debt. Should have been doing it a
loooong time ago.

Oh, it's a great thing. Only one problem: Our entire economy is based on consumption.

On the old Comedy Show "In Living Color" Cephus and Reesie were a couple of characters whose band was Sexual Chocolate.

Here's part of your answer Z:
Report: Obama Launches New Program to Help Corporations "Take Advantage of Low Labor Costs" Abroad
by David Sirota
U.S. To Train 3,000 Offshore IT Workers
Despite President Obama's pledge to retain more hi-tech jobs in the U.S., a federal agency run by a hand-picked Obama appointee has launched a $22 million program to train workers, including 3,000 specialists in IT and related functions, in South Asia.
Following their training, the tech workers will be placed with outsourcing vendors in the region that provide offshore IT and business services to American companies looking to take advantage of the Asian subcontinent's low labor costs...
The outsourcing program (is) sure to draw the most fire from critics. While Obama acknowledged that occupations such as garment making don't add much value to the U.S. economy, he argued relentlessly during his presidential run that lawmakers needed to do more to keep hi-tech jobs in IT, biological sciences, and green energy in the country.
Unbelievable, and another shining example of coroporate capture.

Yep, if you're giving or receiving the double thumb dunk in Boone, it requires permission - not just an unattended community shower.

Since they take the census every 10 years, I wouldn't count it as part of the stimulus.
It's nice to get roads repaved, but I'd rather see the money spent on bridge repair. I don't know if that is happening or not, I haven't seen it.

Read an article the other day that many state DOT's are actually tearing UP paved roads because of the expense of maintaining them. In many rural areas they're going back to gravel.....
