Proposals to see 150,000 miles of roads, 4,000 miles of railways, 150 miles of runways constructed or rebuilt
Vowing to find new ways to stimulate the sputtering economy, President Barack Obama will call for long-term investments in the nation's roads, railways and airports that would cost at least $50 billion, administration officials said.
The infrastructure investments are one part of a package of targeted proposals the White House is expected to announce in hopes of jump-starting the economy ahead of the November election.
Obama will outline the infrastructure proposal Monday at a Labor Day event in Milwaukee.

This is what the stimulus bill should have been limited to in the first place. Our nation's infrastructure is crumbling, and needs trillions of dollars in upgrades...
Obama will also call for the creation of a permanent infrastructure bank that would focus on funding national and regional infrastructure projects.
Officials wouldn't say what the total cost of the infrastructure investments would be, but did say the initial $50 billion represents a significant percentage. Officials said the White House would consider closing a number of special tax breaks for oil and gas companies to pay for the proposal

It only takes $50B to build that many roads, etc. and we spent $800B on what?
If the original stimulus package would have been $350B for this kind of stuff it would have had a lot more bi-partison support.
Problem is there is no understanding that we now have structural issues with our economy that are not going to be cured by the government spending another gob of money. Set the rules in place as far as taxes and health care and regulations and whatever else and the economy will recover at the pace established by the rules. Slower or faster depending on how much burden is placed on it.

As I recall, I (desperately) advocated govt. investing our tax dollars in infrastructure repairs/development a few years ago right after Pelosi and Associates began their occupation of Congress and began throwing billions at social programs designed SOLELY to entrench their positions...

So, now that 28% (...the TRUE figure) of America is unemployed, our infrastructure is decades behind in maintenance and development, you support infrastructure spending at a time when our nation has been beached and is weeping poverty?

$800B could have created a program on the scale of the Civilian Conservation Corps improving infrastructure and reducing unemployment. I don't know exactly what we got or are getting from it aside from some paved roads.

My county has been paving every single road around me for the past 2 years. They should have waited for some of this Federal money.

My 50 mile round trip commute has been completely repaved, for which I'm grateful. However, I have to get the front end of my car repainted because of all the paving debris pockmarking the lip spoiler, hood, bumper, and front quarter panels.

Agreed - trying to sell the last stimulus on the idea of infrastructure improvements and "shovel ready projects" and then doing little to nothing in that regard in that stimulus was a huge mistake. However, even these projects aren't necessarily stimulative - by their very nature, these are going to be long, drawn out projects. If we want to bring employment down between now and next year, this isn't going to do it. It's money well spent, especially in the long term, but it's not a real fix to the problems we're in right now.
The comment you have about setting the rules is an interesting one. That's been one of the problems of the past two years - there's no real good read on what the rules will be. There's a lot of hesitation out there to spend money because people don't know what's coming next and to what extent the rules will be. Being unclear in terms of direction and communicating that direction has been a sore failing for this administration, especially alarming because this was supposed to be an administration good at communication.

Actually, no.
I have been advocating for major spending on infrastructure for years. It is a ticking time-bomb that SHOULD have been started years ago.
I made posts complaining about us rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, but no money for ours back in 2003.
