Travis and Jon - are you sure that Obama's really on your side? He could end DADT with the stroke of his pen, and yet has not. And now his Justice Dept. is appealing a judge's ruling that prevented the U.S. government from banning same-sex marriages. He's arguably worse than the Westboro Church folks - at least you know where they stand and can dismiss them as a bunch of crackpots. Obama has taken your contributions, made all sorts of promises, and yet keeps stringing you along with pleas for patience as he enacts the rest of his agenda. And now he's actively fighting against gay marriage. When do you ditch this loser and start the call for Hilary in 2012?

(Reuters) - The Obama administration decided on Tuesday to appeal a judge's rulings that prevented the U.S. government from banning same-sex marriages, a move that could undermine support among President Barack Obama's traditional liberal base ahead of a key election.

The rulings being appealed by the government were made in July by U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro in Boston who found the law violated the U.S. Constitution's 10th Amendment, which protects states' rights, and the clause granting equal protection under the law.

Under his rulings, same-sex couples would be entitled to the same federal spousal benefits and protections that are afforded to heterosexual married couples.

"As a policy matter, the President has made clear that he believes DOMA is discriminatory and should be repealed," said Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler. "The Justice Department is defending the statute, as it traditionally does when acts of Congress are challenged."

If Obama believes that DOMA is discriminatory and should be repealed, then he should work to have it repealed, not work to defend it. What exactly has he done to repeal it?

Shouldn't "change we can believe in" mean breaking from tradition?

Because being opposed to "marriage" between people of the same sex is apples and oranges different from standing up for their basic human and civil rights to not be discriminated against in their workplace.

DOMA bars gay marriage. The judge struck it down. Obama's admin is appealing. Ergo, Obama's administration is fighting against gay marriage.

Workplace discrimination is a separate issue that flows down from the underlying marriage/domestic partnership definitions, no?

No. While allowing same sex couples to have a state/federally recognized marriage with all the social/legal/tax/financial advantages is a civil rights issue, I can appreciate that some people for purely religious reasons will try to seperate marriage from other forms of civil rights, IE, workplace equal treatment.

Blacks and women can be legally married and still be subject to horrendous workplace and social discrimination.

Really no different for same sex couples.
