i think we should ask Israel to join NATO, so we would be obligated to defend Israel with our entire military in case Israel is attacked.



Thoughts?

France and Germany would oppose it because we know who might attack Israel...and France and Germany don't want to endanger their business connections...

IMHO, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain would side with France and Germany in fighting it...

The netherlands and Belgium because they would oppose war to defend Israel...and Spain currently is run by a Socisalist government that would oppose anything the US proposed...

For ESP, there's no need to resort to THAT argument, Col, though it certainly is true. ESP has ALWAYS had weak governments that kowtow to whatever FRA says. It's been like that since before the American revolution, and it probably will always be like that.

I disagree...the government prior to the current Socialist government was a strong supporter of the U.S. and had troops in Iraq...the Socialist government ran on a foreign policy platform of opposing the U.S. action and pulling its troops out of Iraq...

That's the Spanish people's perogitive...but it does send a clear message to the rest of the world...so in the context of this discussion, it's a necessary part of the arguement...

No that's not what I'm saying...

IMHO, the current Spanish government would not vote to take on the responsibility (under NATO) of defending Israel...remember, Spain was hit hard (the subway bombings) for it's part in supporting the U.S. with troops in Iraq...

OK - gotcha.

I can just about guarantee you that if ISR is accepted into NATO, the Palestinian Authority (or whatever they're calling it nowadays) will immediately join the Warsaw Pact (or whatever successor organization exists). Where will that get us? Probably another world war, or at least a huge regional mass conflag.

There is no successor to the Warsaw Pact...lots of those countries have now joined NATO, which has really honked off the Russians...

Israel will not become part of NATO...the PA will do as they are told (at various times by Hamas, the U.S., Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and occasionally Israel) all the while operating a corrupt, socialist government that governs very little...

I say, let anybody in that wants in, as long as they understand what they're committing to. Then, the first time they spit the bit, they're kicked to the curb and they're on their own.
