Interesting. I thought this kind of thing was a big criticism of Bush (not that he wasn't close with the Saud).
I thought Bush was the one that was buddies with the Saudis?

I agree the size of the latest deal is pretty staggering, but we've been glad-handing with the Saudis militarily for decades. I vividly recall, as a kid, driving by Dover AFB and asking my dad which country the C-130 was from that had the big green rectangle on the tail with the sword and the squiggly writing I couldn't read. Used to see them all the time in the 80s/early 90s but not so much anymore.

Re: I thought Bush was the one that was buddies with the Sau
I know.
Like all of Europe, Saudi Arabia has depended on the US for its overall security.
I just find it ironic that John McCain was called "Bush Lite", but as it turns out that title belongs to Obama more and more every day.
I have also noted how Obama has talked about how the US has acted arrogantly in the world, making people (read: Muslims) hate us. Funny that he does not understand that after our support for Israel, our support for Saudi Arabia and Egypt are some of Al Qaeda's biggest motivators and recruiting tools.

The Bush family and the House of Saud go back before WWII and are incredibly intertwined both financially and politically and that might be what actually concerned Americans... but selling weapons
We'll sell weapons to just abut anybody - including the Taliban circa 1990
So your point about who's buddies with who is interesting but the truth is we are the worlds largest arms distribution house - but - The Bush family actually has business ties and political ties to saud...
Although I'm sure none of those facts will get in the way of the Right Wing Media spin machine
1) Worlds largest Arms distributor sells arms to Saudi Arabia
2) Historical trend of selling arms to Saudi Arabia continues
Yeah, that's FRONT LINE NEWS at FOX - but it'll read more like this:
Obama in bed with Saudi's on secret Arms deal...

Chizz, not quite. I understand your point, but MY point is that being friendly with the Sauds was a criticism of Bush. The Bush family is an oil family and therefore it would be surprising if they WEREN'T close to the Saudis. Bush did not decry or criticize our dealings with that country while giving them material support.Chizzang wrote:CID1990 wrote:I know.

Obama HAS criticised our activities in the Arab world, and yet his administration (quietly I might add- meaning that they were sneaking smokes from mom's purse when she wasn't looking) continued to EXACTLY the thing that creates enemies in that region. He might as well have claimed that Beshar Assad has WMDs and attacked Syria.

I've seen members of the Saudi Air Force staying at Dover Downs many times over the last few years I've been there.93henfan wrote:I agree the size of the latest deal is pretty staggering, but we've been glad-handing with the Saudis militarily for decades.
