I watched the episode in question. This is what it showed. Palin was hunting with her 72 yr old father who apparently has hunted for 50 years, and a family friend of their's (Becker) who looked like he was in his 60s and had apparently hunted his whole life. Was there 3rd day out at this location in the tundra apparently about 250 miles north of the Artic Circle, 2nd and last day hunting. Becker got one caribou the prior day. After the 3rd miss Palin's dad says somethings not right here, because this gun is right on. She misses 2 more times (the last one the caribou was moving at a jog), then her dad says to take Becker's rifle, but to watch out, because its going to kick. 1st shot Palin takes with Becker's rifle the deer goes down. Afterward her dad is saying I'm going to shoot that gun and show you its hitting right on and she says I'm going to bet you 5 dollars the scope is off. After they make it back to where they have their little camp set up with the tents Becker takes what looked like it might have been a paper plate and sets it up what looks like about 100 yards away tops from where Palin's dad is set up. Palin's dad takes 2 shots, neither hit, so she won the bet.
Now either her dad can't shoot worth a lick either, or the scope was off. Sounds like they failed to properly zero the rifle, or the scope got knocked out of alignment. Here is the video with the misses:

Apparently they were in northern Alaska 250 miles north of the Artic Circle. They had to take a prop plane to some northern outpost, then had to be ferried 1 at a time in a single passenger Piper to out in the middle of nowhere. There probably wasn't another soul within 100 miles of them. In most of the lower 48 he's right, but in this case, who cares.

Need to post this in the other Palin thread. Sounds like her crosshairs are the safest place to be.

It is a little surprising that somebody who talks about guns as much as she does and uses them for photo ops as much as she does isn't a very good shot.

If you do not know jack about hunting principles and ethics, then stick to something that you might know a tiny bit about instead, like being a parrot.

Hint, under no circumstances do you fire a high powered hunting rifle at a target that is on a horizon. No circumstances whatsoever. That is an unforgivable sin in ethical hunting, case closed.

No shooting a rifle at live game, that you are unfamiliar with, and one that has not been sighted in by anybody, much less the actual shooter. That may not be unforgivable, but it sure is dumb, ignorant, and redneck. And real sportsmen everywhere will tell anybody that it is another black mark on our sport, and gives too much ammunition for the very bunny huggers and anti-hunting lobbies that your party detests. Are you too unschooled in this to not see that??
