There really wasn't much difference between the arms race and the space race. When Sputnik was launched, it was seen as the first step toward the militarization of space. Now, space is militarized and will continue to be even more militarized in the future. It's only a matter of time before we have killer satellites and weapons platforms in orbit around the Earth.

well for starters we spend ALMOST as much as pretty much the whole rest of the world combined on Military...
And it's never enough - frankly it's the definition of "Insanity"

If we spent as much as the TOP 10 other countries combined we'd be debt free in 5 years

Yeah, the pie chart doesn't even pass the sniff test, especially concerning China.

That chart actually looks about right for 2009 when it was calculated.

China's spending has increased exponentially since then, and it is also based on our best intelligence estimates, since China conceals that spending that they do not wish for us to know about.

I also have no problem with reducing defense spending as long as we reduce our mandate to provide security for countries like Norway, et al. We have had some pretty big military spending cuts over the last 4 administrations (2 cuts to be exact) but we did not scale back our self-imposed obligations.

That means the rise of contractors, among other things.

And even THOSE aren't going to be entirely accurate.... but China's spending would certainly be higher.
