Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl announced Thursday that he would retire after his current term, creating the fifth open seat Senate race of the 2012 cycle.

Speaking at a press conference in Phoenix, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate said, “There’s more to life than being a United States senator. I never anticipated I would be in public service for 26 years.”

good riddance to bad rubbish.

not just because he's a conk... but because he was a lousy f'ing senator... terrible on constituent service and utterly useless... (there are plenty of R's who do good work on constituent services... McCain does pretty well for example)

If she did, she'd be considered sane

jon,

who are the likely belligerents in the race? Haworth? Franks? and for the D's - Goddard? Grijalva? Mitchell?

Word of an open Senate seat in Arizona, which has not seen a Senate vacancy since Sen. Dennis DeConcini declined to seek re-election in 1994, will stir a frenzy of interest from potential candidates in both parties. U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., last week told The Republic that he is interesting in running if Kyl does not. Former U.S. Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., also has said that he might consider a Senate run.

Other possible Republican contenders mentioned by GOP insiders include U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth, former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods, former state Treasurer Dean Martin and Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. On the Democratic side, Napolitano, who is now Obama's Homeland Security secretary; former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson; and 2010 state attorney general nominee Felecia Rotellini have been mentioned as possibilities. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., frequently was mentioned as a possible, perhaps even likely, Senate candidate prior to a Jan. 8 assassination attempt near Tucson that left her seriously injured

Flake, Franks, Hayworth likely, possibly Sen President Russell Pearce, who makes Bachmann look moderate and sane.

Not sure if Goddard will run again.

Woods is likely too moderate to win the Republican Primary, although if he did, I would have to seriously consider votiing for him, depending on who the Dems nominated

the true shame about gabby - i'd be on that campaign if Jan 8 hadn't happened (i know her manager really well) no way she can make the run now...

as for Napolitano... probably the Dems best choice at this point unless Gabby goes for yet another miracle at this point...

the Goper base will push for Flake or Hayworth I would think...

Giffords would have been a great candidate - and a very good Senator. Electable in AZ, as well.

Hopefully, the GOP is done with Hayworth. Don't agree with Flake on much, but at least he is intellegent
