GA GOP wants to make miscarriages felonies

'Prenatal murder' means the intentional removal of a fetus from a woman with an intention other than to produce a live birth or to remove a dead fetus; provided, however, that if a physician makes a medically justified effort to save the lives of both the mother and the fetus and the fetus does not survive, such action shall not be prenatal murder. Such term does not include a naturally occurring expulsion of a fetus known medically as a 'spontaneous abortion' and popularly as a 'miscarriage' so long as there is no human involvement whatsoever in the causation of such event.
(c) The act of prenatal murder is contrary to the health and well-being of the citizens of this state and to the state itself and is illegal in this state in all instances.
(d) Any person committing prenatal murder in this state shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, shall be punished as provided in subsection (d) of Code Section 16-5-1.
So if you drink, or do anything that could cause a miscarriage, prison awaits.

Re: GA GOP wants to make miscarriages felonies
For a group of people that profess not meddling in the affairs of others, it certainly is ironic to see them bringing something like this to the table.
People do a lot of really dumb things. Pregnant women holding a cigarette particularly grate on me. But a law? Mmmmmm, no.
And the reason this law stands no chance of passing:

And the reason this law stands no chance of passing:
There is no clarification of what "human involvement" means, and this is hugely problematic as medical doctors do not know exactly what causes miscarriages.

I'm going to liken this to when T-man announced that Obama was going to outlaw fishing...
or like whenever a Democrat gets elected and we're told that they're going to take our guns away
None of which ever seems to happen....

It's hyperbole to the Nth degree. It's on the same line that lifting the gun ban in DC would turn the District into Tombstone, AZ circa 1881.

It's one idiot in GA that proposed this law, everyone has acknowleged that the guy is an idiot and the law doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of passing.

We would like to interrupt this thread to point out how the title of this thread, "GA GOP wants to make miscarriages felonies," leads one who has no real knowledge of the issue to believe the entire republican party in Georgia wants to prosecute any woman who has a miscarriage.

I told this board long ago that we would get to this point. You will soon have to register pregnancies, which will be "monitored" for reaching term by Radical Right RTL Stormtroopers. Investigators will come to your door and force a strip search of your women to verify a viable pregnancy and, if they still don't believe the bulged abdomen, they will force your gal to submit to a urine or blood test to confirm a fetus is still inside her. If they are seen on the street by undeputized "concerned" citizens, like Hen and Hoagie or their nosy wives, a cop can be summoned to check pregnancy paperwork on the spot. God help you, too, if you are an expectant lesbian couple.

Because of the language on "malice" I don't see the language of the proposed law as including things like drinking while pregnant. It looks to me like there has to be intent focused on causing a spontaneous abortion.

Re: GA GOP wants to make miscarriages felonies
I think the Republican Party supports a lot of things involving meddling in the affairs of others. However, the particular issue of elective abortion involves the idea of one individual attacking another. You can take the position that a person should be able to do whatever they want as long as they are not engaging in attacks upon others as a general matter and be opposed to legal elective abortion because it involves a direct attack upon another. For a group of people that profess not meddling in the affairs of others, it certainly is ironic to see them bringing something like this to the table.
What it all comes down to is the nature of the unborn. As an animal, a member of our species comes into existence when genetic recombination is complete. An electdive abortion is killing a living member of our species. That is objective reality.
So it all comes down to whether or not you accept the premise that members of our species have a right to life from the moment they come into existence or if you accept the premise that we can declare they are not "human beings" yet based on subjective criteria we come up with.
