Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, speaking today to the Corps of Cadets at West Point, remarked:
"In my opinion, any future Defense Secretary who advises the President to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should have his head examined."

Gates said big American land army. The knock on Rummy is that it was a small American land army into Iraq, ie not enough troops.

So you don't believe he was talking about Iraq in that quote?
Yes. Rumsfeld wanted to send in a relatively small, fast land army. But, it was still a DAMN BIG army (150,000 is fucking pretty fucking huge unless you're talking about the "several hundred thousand" recommended by Shinseki and others).

Yes Sk, that's what I took him to mean as well. I think Gates would prefer diplomacy followed by Tomahawks followed by SpecOps/Marine Expeditionary Force if necessary. It's a helluva lot cheaper that way.
