Just when you thought the Tea Party couldn't get any dumber...

Texas has long been a hotbed of controversy on immigration issues. And a proposed immigration bill in the Texas state House is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows. The bill would make hiring an "unauthorized alien" a crime punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine, unless that is, they are hired to do household chores.

Yes, under the House Bill 2012 introduced by a tea party favorite state Rep. Debbie Riddle -- who's been saying for some time that she'd like to see Texas institute an Arizona-style immigration law -- hiring an undocumented maid, caretaker, lawnworker or any type of houseworker would be allowed. Why? As Texas state Rep. Aaron Pena, also a Republican, told CNN, without the exemption, "a large segment of the Texas population" would wind up in prison if the bill became law.

"When it comes to household employees or yard workers it is extremely common for Texans to hire people who are likely undocumented workers," Pena told the news giant. "It is so common it is overlooked."

Jon English, Rep. Riddle's chief of staff explained that the exemption was an attempt to avoid "stifling the economic engine" in Texas.

While Texas is an arrogant and annoying state filled with idiots, this is a pretty good law, IMHO. I hope to be able to afford many Mexican servants and yard help some day and I would prefer that the opportunity still be there for me when I am ready for it.

They won't be in the US if illegal employers don't offer them jobs. Then again, 1000's of miles of border might be less difficult and expensive to police than people's hired help.

Until then spend whatever it takes to ship these criminals back to their own country. Consider it a tax for this country not enforcing the laws on the books for the last 50 years.

I agree, the illegal immigrants are breaking the law, however when you have a lot of employers hiring them creating a demand for their services, they won’t stop coming. Also don’t expect anything to happen from the politicians, take this hypocritical stance by the tea party for example. They know nothing can be done to curb illegal immigration; it’s something the Dems and Repubs already figured out long ago. When such a considerable amount of the economy is dependent on cheap illegal labor (service industry, tourist industry, non-unionized construction industry, agribusiness...) there is no stopping it.

The only way it can be stopped, or curbed, is to end all entitlements/welfare programs and get those lazy & useless people to fill the void. Even then I don’t know of any US citizens that will do some of the shitty back breaking jobs that are heavily dependent on illegal labor (agribusiness).

Like I said, "we ain't goin' nowhere."

Which is why this "exemption" in their quest to do away with illegal immigration is so comical.

Oh businesses wouldnt like what I would do to them if they were caught hiring illegal workers.

I didnt intend to project that it was OK for them to do that, I would start with getting the illegals out at all costs then parallel that with sweeping asskicking and fines for any business hiring these people. The cost of hiring illegals would go above and beyond the money they think they would be saving, with the fines and jail time that would rain down on them early and often.

This would be the only way to stop the hiring. And no exemptions for lawn dudes, maids, et.

Of course, if we just opened up immigration into this country, especially to those with plenty of skills, we may not even have this problem. I think we do too much in terms of restricting immigration into this country. Let's take in the best and the brightest from other countries and have them set up shop here. Providing some more legal ways to get here, and targetting the most capable, couldn't be a bad thing, really.

Interesting theory (and one i'm inclined to support)... however... with several million Mexican residents within 100 miles of the southern border, I would think the initial flood would be overwhelming. especially since many would not have the skills you were discussing. the depressant effect on wages would likely be even more significant than it is now.

as for the "best and brightest" we do generally do that. if you have a college degree and want to come here - or are a student in another country and want to study here - getting visa's is pretty easy - and from their the path to citizenship is pretty straightforward.
