Civil Service Board Announces Police Recruit Scores

"DAYTON -- The Dayton Police Department is lowering its testing standards for recruits.

It's a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam.

Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.

Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.

The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That's the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’."

Really...when even the local NAACP president calls the DOJ edict into question...you have to shake your head and wonder WTF is happening here...

The police are suppose to enforce the laws...which implies they have to understand the laws...which requires a certain level of education and learning ability...

So, to LOWER THE STANDARDS so people who failed the basic test can get in...

The United States’ complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in September 2008, alleges that Dayton’s use of an internally created written examination for screening entry-level police officer applicants, and its use of heightened minimum qualifications for entry-level firefighter applicants, i.e. requiring that applicants have EMT-Basic and Firefighter I and II certifications at the time they apply, resulted in disparate impact on African-Americans.

I also haven't seen any evidence that Holder had anything to do with this. You know, a case settled in 2008 could have a stipulation to comply by X-X-2011... and that date is approaching which is why it's making news again. Anyone have a link showing Holder's responsibility?

I clearly and succinctly said, "Obama's Dept. of Justice". The blame is squarely on Holder's shoulders. It doesn't matter if he knew or not, the "buck" has to stop somewhere even though the present administration is never able to own up to it's daily and too numerous to mention mistakes.

This kind of thing has been going on for years. The examination I had to take to get on the police department in Charleston was an absolute joke.

Chief Greenberg figured out a way around the mandates to dumb down recuiting standards by requiring 4 year degrees of all new hires. Waivers available for military service or specialized skills. Some guys came in with degrees in basket weaving from places like App State, but hey, it's a degree. (BTW Charleston PD has about the same number of ASU grads as El Cid grads. We used to all tailgate together at the football games in Charleston and Boone)

He never figured out how to get around the lowered physical standards though. Anyone want to guess why the PT tests are quickly becoming a joke?
