Preckwinkle calls for employee sacrifices
New Cook County Board president says workers must pay more toward their health care and pensions

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/loca ... 8514.story
"We're now in a position where public employees are seen as privileged in relation to the rest of the population because we have both decent salaries and very good benefits," Preckwinkle said Wednesday at a news conference marking her first 100 days in office.

She said the 4 percent share employees pay of their health care costs is "just not sustainable." An aide said the administration will research alternatives before negotiating with unions on potential changes.
...
"We have to make county government more efficient. We have to figure out how to provide good service to people with fewer resources," Preckwinkle said. "We're clearly going to have to consolidate services. We're going to have to do more shared purchases and be more intelligent about our purchasing."

hardly surprising... and while i'm sure there will be push back to a degree - my guess is there won't be near the contentiousness seen in WI... might have something to do with the fact that she's respecting their right to bargain collectively.

This is a sea change for Cook County. Previous administrations seemed to govern with the opinion that inefficiency and patronage were a fact of life and that when money ran short you just raised taxes to cover the shortfall. It was the epitome of donk policies gone bad. It was everything that is wrong with Illinois government x 100.

As far as collective bargaining goes - I've worked with unions and I know that they've done a lot of good; I also worry that some are now so intent on protecting their members benefits that they are damaging America's ability to compete and actually hurting job creation in the long-run rather than trying to partner with management to do the what is best for employer and employee.

I'm also willing to admit that there are inherit conflicts of interest between Wall St being regulated by Washinton politicians elected with the help of Wall St money. Are you willing to admit that there are inherent conflicts of interest between public unions bargaining with officials selected by politicians who were elected with the money and volunteer support of those unions?

Four things inhabit those hills 1) Directors 2) Actors 3) Lawyers 4) House sitters
Plus the water is freezing until almost August (I'm curious about your trip Obi Wan)
