"Financial Martial Law"

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is expanding on some groundwork layed by a previous Democratic governor.

Terrible idea. :ohno:
According to the law, which has already been approved in the House, the governor will be able to declare "financial emergency" in towns or school districts and appoint someone to fire local elected officials, break contracts, seize and sell assets, and eliminate services.
Under the law whole cities or school districts could be eliminated without any public participation or oversight, and amendments designed to provide minimal safeguards and public involvement were voted down.

An amendment to require Emergency Managers to hold monthly public meetings to let people know how they are governing was rejected by Senate Republicans, along with proposals to cap Emergency Manager compensation and require that those appointed to run school districts have some background in education.

UPDATE: As has been pointed out to me, the legislative mechanics that Snyder is seeking to expand into what Republican state Senator Jack Brandenburg terms "financial martial law" were put in place by Democratic Governor Jim Blanchard -- the nonpartisan embrace of these policies further their likeness to the trade policies that people like Greider and Moyers reported on a decade ago.

I've got some friends in Michigan - a buddy who goes to Detroit on business from Ann Arbor about once a week... he describes Detroit as Thunderdome and Ann Arbor as an oasis in the middle of a nightmare.

Actually I was going to add that Traverse City is cool but the drive there sucks. I hit submit first and said F&*k it. The drive up there really is a drive through a shithole. Nothing really redeeming about it at all.

Your friend is a myopic turd...no surprise there.

Plenty of places in Michigan outside of liberal control that are beautiful places. The UP is a fantstic place...conservative values. Detroit is a shit hole and a liberal stronghold...a prime example of what happens when libs get control.

Gee, where did all the money go? :dunce:

Recently I saw a set of pictures. They included a 1940s picture of Detroit and then a modern picture of Detroit.

Then they showed a 1940s picture of Hiroshima followed by a modern photo of Hiroshima.

Depressing.

This has already happened in Cali, though it's restricted to the state taking over school districts.

Great! We can discuss why Portland has light rail, and more strip clubs than churches. We can compare Detroit and Mogadishu. Tell them I'll probably be coming down just after the new year. :thumb:
