in terms of millions of dollars. At least if you're a conservatard it is.
House votes to eliminate funding for NPR, which in FY10 amounted to about 5 million.
Meanwhile, funding for military marching bands and a NASCAR sponsorship are left un touched.
The bill to the taxpayer for bands and racecars? Yep, 500 Million.
Not that any of this posturing was ever really about the buget, but it is now clear this is nothing more than partisan political bitching and moaning.

You got a source for that $500 million figure, or did you just pull it out of your ass?

dude - that's some peacenik site... not a news source.
I know the author of the "defund NASCAR" proposal personally - and it's more like $28 million in sponsorships. IMO a waste of money - but it's not $500 million. (and no, there is no WAY that all of our military bands combined cost 472 million...)
I don't love the de-funding of public broadcasting - but I also think they've built a funding model doesn't really need tax dollars anymore - they are largely self-sustaining... and while I don't like the crass and obvious reasons behind the gopers making such a production about 5 million bucks... i'm also not going to get bent out of shape about it (I'm much more worried about their plans to cut the National Weather Service)

Washington post was the source cited by the writer.
Link was embeded near the top.
That's pretty credible.

From your link:
Based on the Marine figures, total Defense Department spending could reach $500 million or more a year.
I've enlarged the operative word. That's not a"source"....that's speculation.

From the same article:
A statute passed years ago by Congress, at the behest of the national musicians union, prevents the services from selling their recordings: They must be given away to educational and nonprofit organizations.
So, once again, unions are the problem.

Good question - I don't know how many people enlist in the military because of what they see turning left on Sundays.

What's a full boat NASCAR sponsership go for these days? Last I heard it was something approaching 1M per race, 35-40M for a full season?
Still chickenfeed in the context of the entire federal buget, but tough to say it does more good for more taxpayers than 5M for NPR does.

It's complete bullshit. We already fund the military with an advertising budget. Let them take the money out of that.

The Marines put their yearly cost at $50 million
The Army estimates their cost at around $198 million
The total certainly should come in near $500 million once the Navy, Air Force are added in.
