Hippy Gets Economics Lesson

A couple of months ago, while driving back from Seattle after drinking Seattle Griz and Cleets under the table, I was listening to the local NPR news report about a business in Seattle that had not pricing, but rather asked people to "pay what they could afford". The proprietor had no rules, and felt people who could afford more would offset those who couldn't afford to pay what a product was worth.
The reporter's summation was that the proprietor was a visionary blazing paths for what businesses would be like in the future under a more "socialist" class structure.
I was shaking my head so hard, for a moment I thought I had fractured my 3rd and 4th vertebrae...but after a few moments, realized how RIGHT it was for this business to perform this "experiment", which was destined to fail.
Et, Voila!

'Pay what you want' store forced to close
By TONYA MOSLEY / KING 5 News
SEATTLE – A shop that lets you pay what want is becoming another casualty of the sagging economy.
Come Thanksgiving, the OpShOp on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill will close its doors.
"I ask people when they pay to pay with their head or their heart,” said OpShOp owner Jane Horowitz...
...“I can't pay my rent,” said Horowitz. She is two months late on the rent and has a week to move out.
The landlord, Robert Burkheimer, says his hands are tied. He has to pay his mortgage and he’s already struggling to find tenants to fill up a once thriving retail strip.
Note about business plans: Retail is tough. Undefined target (multiple products) requires addl. overhead. Given the first two conditions, location is more critical than words can express. ASSUMING THAT LOCATING IN A WEALTHY NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE QUEEN ANNE HILL WILL DRAW IN AFFLUENT CLIENTS IS ONLY APPLICABLE IF THE PRODUCT IS TRENDY ENOUGH TO DRAW THE AFFLUENT CLIENTELE. Doing the first three without utilization of a price point (...or price), is a leap of faith, not a business plan.
Nice idea that undoubtedly appeals to eco-lovers, extremist progressive politico's, as well as heavy drug users and homeless.
From each, according to their ability. To each, according to their needs.
...Doesn't work, folks.

So let me get this straight.....she set up a business with what best can be described as a tiered pricing system based upon need.....but, wait, it wasn't even that good....she had no enforcement power and merely "suggested" people pay what they felt the product was "worth" to them? Who financed this endeavor? I need their phone number if possible........
You see, this what the PFL's of the world do not understand....mandating "From each, according to their ability. To each, according to their needs." only works because there is fear of imprisonment or death at the hands of the instituting party (government).....in the words of Hamilton:
“In the main it will be found that a power over a man's support (salary) is a power over his will”
You gotta wonder if this person now feels disillusioned by her fellow man.....

She doesn't feel disillusioned. She's blaming it on the nefarious "economy".

It's George W. Bush's fault!

Why do you always find it necessary to revel in the suffering of gentle people?
Also, thanks for the business lesson, Mr. Obvious.

He's not reveling in the suffering of gentle people. He's reveling in the suffering of idiots.
Big difference. It's part of Darwin's natural selection.

No shit, D1B. The people don't hurt anyone, try to do something good and he sh*ts on them
with glee. WTF is wrong with you, Tman?
Ever wonder why it's called ConkHate?
Good heavens.

If you found out your company was "trying to do something good" by not setting a price for its products...and telling its customers to pay what ever they thought they could...you'd be running away so fast someone might mistake you for a running back, not a lineman...
They're making fun of an idiot...plain and simple idiot...
An idiot with good intentions...but an idiot none-the-less...

Oh, bullshit. It was an experiment.
Reread his entire post, Hoagie. He shits on people's misfortune.

Cap, I've read the post...comment from T-Man, and the story about this nice lady...
Experiments don't put a company out of business...stupidy does...
You know, there's enough basic economic knowledge available to all the know that an experiment like this, taken to the degree she took it to, will cause business failure 99.9% of the time...
Hell, I got a B.A. in Communications...any idiot can get that...and even I know you don't run a business that way...
Can T-Man be sharp in his opinions...yea...
But he's not wrong...

D1B...it's called "accountability". If you or I or anyone attempts to assume a demagogic position telling others how to live their lives and how they should conduct their business, as the owner tacitly had done by publicly discussing her business model, and the NPR folks unequivocally did when they slathered the owner with praise for her "socialist" example, AND THE SUGGESTED METHOD TURNS OUT TO BE NON-FUNCTIONAL, then the demagogue who made the proposition needs to be held to account. No more, no less.
The banks have been facing this the past couple of months, as are many other "pure" capitalist enterprises. Today, it's Hippy's turn to take the heat.

First, remove your head from Tman's ass. Okay? He can fight his own battles.
My beef is, according to him anyone who is not a fat, wealthy, male capitalist is an idiot. He solely reserves his disdain for hippies, environmentalists, the young and sometimes women - essentially peaceful people with concerns other than the bottom line.
So fuck him and the toxic existence he defends.

Sometimes experiments are conducted by idiots. This one cost the owner the business and some money, any employees their jobs, and the landlord a piece of his business. Seems like an idiot conducting a fairly stupid experiment. If I were to experiment with removing nose hair by sticking a firecracker up my nose and lighting it you would be correct in calling me an idiot conducting a stupid experiment whether my intentions were good or not. BTW if you're gonna try that experiment start with a lady finger...the firecracker appears to be slight over kill in the early stages here.

My head isn't embedded in T-Man's ass. I just agree with him. You guys keep claiming "no one's listening" and "no one agrees with you". I'm just trying to prove to you that you're wrong.
But, your canned (and very predictable response) will be to call me names, marginalize my opinion, and continue to attack T-man's points without actually DISCUSSING the issue. Typical donk hatred.

Discuss what AZ? I laid out my disagreement. What, do you want a 10,000 word tman rant?
I called him out for his hate fueled disdain for anything alternative to his Donald Trump world view. He hates environmentalists and peaceful people and I'll be here to let him know he's a hateful and miserable. He has no conception of balance. His world is a toxic spreadsheet circle jerk with no concern or recognition for the bigger picture.

I will guarantee you that you "laid our your disagreement" without ever actually READING what he posted. THAT'S the issue, D. You and Bill can't get past the hate for even one moment. You insist in shooting the messenger instead....

"Accountability" is for piss ants like the above mentioned hippy.
The banks haven't been facing shit, except for dumptruck loads of free taxpayer money with no strings attached.
But the corporate titans sure do
talk a good "accountability", and "meritocracy" game.

A little less...as vegetarians/vegans, taking meat out of their/employees budgets saves money...
...course, then again, with what they lose in acuity and cognitive capacity, better call it a wash.
