BlackBerry users no longer will be able to pinpoint police drunken-driving checkpoints.
Following a request Tuesday from four Democratic senators, Ontario, Canada-based Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, has agreed to pull from its online store downloadable applications that allow its operating systems to identify the locations of local police DUI checkpoints.
Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada, Charles Schumer of New York, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Tom Udall of New Mexico asked RIM, Apple and Google to disable or stop selling the apps for BlackBerry, iPhone and iPad, and Android devices.

At least in Alexandria and Fairfax, police are required to announce drunk-driving locations beforehand. So just check your local jurisdictions website. Or get on their e-mail blast (Alexandria even sends out their tallies after a checkpoint

). or better yet...don't drive drunk.

Has anyone ever gone through a checkpoint? I've never seen one, ever.

Twice, but I think it's been about 6 or 7 years since the last one. I hadn't been drinking a drop and I was still nervous as shit.

Closing your eyes and flooring it past the checkpoint doesn't count as not ever seeing one.

I went through two in the same weekend. My parents were with me visiting for the weekend, and we were all stone sober. Still got a bit nervous for some reason
maybe it was the body in the trunk.

BTW, there are still quite a few DUI apps on the Droid market. Does BB have their own app market?

Two kilos of blow in the trunk will do that to you.

Well, that was a fail on my part, huh? 'or' should have been 'only'. Kinda really changes the whole perspective, doesn't it?
Fuck this place, I'm outta here.

There probably is.
Hell, I have a ghost radar on my phone. Apparently my house is haunted a fuck.

Went through a DUI checkpoint on the PCH in Malibu on Saturday night. I'd had 6 beers at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company....they waved me right through.
WTF?

Yes. Trooper asked me if I had been drinking. I replied yes, a couple of beers. At that point I had to pass a field test and blow into
three different intoxilators before they were convinced that I wasn't drunk. After all the hassle, I blew an .01.

I think I would have stopped at one and told them to go eff themselves.

I'd rather just take the breathalyzer than dance around on the roadside like some trained bear/sideshow freak.

Bingo!
I've been through one. Was waved through as well. A shame for the onsite officers since I didn't have a driver's license, was driving on a suspended license for DWI and had 6 bench warrants for my arrest for FTA....thank god I'm white...

Agree...and the breathylizer on the side of the road tells you whether you actually want to blow on the one at the magistrates or deal without a license for one year....

I've never been through a checkpoint, but I did get pulled over for speeding after a night of some pretty heavy drinking in Virginia. The state cop pulled me over about a half mile before my exit into the range side at Quantico (ungated at the time, which was the only reason I even thought about driving). I pulled out my driver license and my military ID and he told me to slow it down and have a nice night. Whew. Career-ending incident narrowly avoided.
