Actually I think Obama is going to be in a VERY hard spot when he has to appoint a new SecState. In hindsight, Clinton was the no-brainer choice, and even though he chose her for political reasons (to throw the Travises a bone), she turned out to be exactly the Secretary he needed. Bellicose enough to keep the hawks quiet, and liberal enough to keep the gays and women appeased.

He is going to have a tough choice this time around. There's really nobody out there with known credentials who can walk the line credibly in the way Clinton has. I expect that folks like KYJelly have actually bitten on what is in fact a trial balloon. Obama probably thinks that because State is has been written off for the past 50 years as a liberal bastion (it is) that he can put pretty much any granola in there that he wants and it wouldn't matter. I think that would be a huge mistake. Any proponent of soft power is going to install a SecState who is not going to start Republican mouths frothing just by virtue of his or her existence, the way this one would. I am surprised they even floated her, quite frankly. A soft power advocate is going to have to carry a huge political stick and have credentials on the warmaking side of the house. Kerry wants the job but he's a shill and nobody takes him seriously. I think a great candidate would be (God help me for saying it) Lindsey Graham. He has military credentials (ex-military guys as SecStates have great track records... see Powell and Marshall) and he is a moderate. He carries quite a bit of respect on both sides of the aisle, and he is a major proponent of soft power and a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Plus, he would be a good foil for Kerry, who I think might well be a better candidate for SecDef than anything else. Kerry would have to reconcile his past criticisms of military action with present realities, and I think this would make him a 'tread lightly' kind of guy, but I digress.

LIndsey Graham for Sec State. He's a pragmatic choice, and I do think Obama is a pragmatist. You heard it here first.
