TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is making another attempt to remove gray wolves in the western Great Lakes region from the endangered species list.

The agency says Friday that wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin have recovered and no longer need federal protection. About 4,000 wolves roam the three states.

Federal courts have overruled several previous attempts to drop Great Lakes wolves from the protected lists after environmental and animal rights groups filed lawsuits.

Congress approved legislation Thursday stripping federal protections from wolves in Montana, Idaho, Washington state, Oregon and Utah.

Do you know what would happen if Wolves went extinct?

Wolves would go extinct. Nothing else. We'd be fine. The Planet would be fine.

Don't get me wrong. I kind of like it that they're not extinct. But if they were I think I could get by.

The arrival of other species...like Homo sapiens, is sometimes a factor.

The whole Endangered Species Act thing is madness. No way we should have a law like that.

BILLINGS - Federal wildlife officials say they will take more than 1,300 gray wolves in the Northern Rockies off the endangered species list within 60 days.

An attachment to the budget bill signed into law Friday by President Barack Obama strips protections from wolves in five Western states.

It marks the first time Congress has taken a species off the endangered list.

Idaho and Montana plan public wolf hunts this fall. Hunts last year were canceled after a judge ruled the predators remained at risk.

Protections remain in place for wolves in Wyoming because of its shoot-on-sight law for the predators.

There are no immediate plans to hunt the small wolf populations in Oregon and Washington. No packs have been established in Utah.
