"Pakistan to let Chinese plunder secret U.S. stealth helicopter downed in Bin Laden raid
The U.S. has since demanded the Pakistanis return the destroyed helicopter.
But according to ABC news, Pakistani officials have said the Chinese were also 'very interested' in seeing the tail section, with one unnamed official adding: 'We might let [the Chinese] take a look.' "

Sounds as though the Pakistanis want a bidding war for the helicopter parts.

Maybe Pakistan doesn't like getting US dollars.

As I said on another site, I don't get how people just think that they should hand over that helicopter.
If Mexico covertly violated our airspace and sent warbirds and troops into a compound 100 miles from Washington, shot a few people, then took one away for burial at sea, how would you, as an American, feel about giving Mexico back one of its toys?

My wife and I had this discussion last night - Americans wouldn't tolerate this at all, but then again we aren't a bunch of sand farmers reliant on opium crops and foreign aid as an economic engine. We got what we wanted by a lot of questionable means, but we kind of have them over a barrel with the aid we give them. They finally have a small bargaining chip, but I suspect we'll get
most of our chopper back. Look for the Chinese to introduce something similar in a few years.

hello, Prime Minister Singh? How would the Indian military like a honey of a deal on some really nice helicopters? While we're at it... anything else we can do for the largest democracy in the world? tell you where the Mumbai plotters are? well, at this point our guess would be resting comfortably on Pakistani military base... now you see why we're offering the helicopters...

Exactly. Pakistan is saying Fvck America. Glad you agree that their response is rational.

Question: Does Mexico send us $4 billion a year in aid?

Not really the full scenario.

Agreed - was Mexico trying to find a guy who killed thousands of their citizens and then paid us billions of dollars per year to help find him only to see that we had him, and we're hiding him in that compound outside of Washington, and were only pretending to look for him? If I was an American in that case, I would feel pretty crummy about my country and would look to emmigrate. I hear Tijuana is a respectable place to raise a family in that bizzarro-world.

Well since the Paks have ramped up their air defenses and over all security because of this raid, any notion of trying to send over a cloud of heavy bombers is probably out of the question.

Well, if you count present and future votes from baby anchors, I'm sure it adds up to that for the Democrats.

A good carpet bombing would probably increase Pakistani property values.

We were not giving billions of dollars of aid to Pakistan each year so that they could find Osama.
Pakistan isn't an American ally...they don't share our values. We've again found ourselves in a position of giving billions to a corrupt government in a whacky marriage of temporary convenience.
If you want a better analogy...how about if some Mexican drug enforcement officers came across the US border unannounced and shot up a compound in Phoenix, AZ...would we be happy about it? We're both fighting drug lords who are killing people on both sides of the border. We both occassionally share information and assist in operations. On the surface, we are allied in the fight against the bad guys even though our Congress - supposedly on the side of the good guys - looks the other way as people and drugs easily cross the border. Oh, and so do those pesky guns that are used to routinely target and kill their police force and civilians.
But, if Mexico suddenly launched covert operations across the border whenver they wanted to, I am sure most Americans would be pissed off and would not be willing to give up any new technology they left behind.

Hey, I'd love to pound Af-Pak into rubble if they threaten our people...anyone else, too.
I just find it funny that Americans think we have some God-given right to demand certain behaviors from other people. The helicopter parts are an asset...and Pakistan will use it as such. No surprise...we do such things all the time whenever it is in our best interest. The "you owe us the parts back because we've been sending you money" attitude is silly and naive...and it certainly shows a lack of understanding of other cultures. Cripes, you'd think that we would know who/what we were dealing with since we've been sending them billions. Then again, we routinely toss millions to Afghan war lords and political figures who turn around and stab us in the back.

A billion here...a billion there....pretty soon you're talking about real money.
