Physicist Stephen Chu to be named Energy Secretary

Post by dbackjon »

President-elect Barack Obama is likely to name Steven Chu, a physicist who runs the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as his energy secretary, three Democratic officials close to the transition said.

The three officials said the announcement is expected next week in Chicago, Illinois, and that Obama will also name Carol Browner, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency in the Clinton administration, as the newly created "climate czar" inside the White House.

Chu won the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics and is highly respected in energy circles. But some Democrats have privately expressed concern that Chu has no political experience as he takes on the monumental task of passing a landmark energy reform bill early next year.

Although Browner is seen as a shrewd inside player who could help the incoming energy secretary navigate Capitol Hill, Obama will face questions about how effective his team will be going up against oil companies and other special interests that do not want to change the status quo.

I wish him the best. Unfortunately too many that are not politicians don't know how to play the game and have a lot of problems.

In introducing him, Obama cited the well worn global warming threat of "disappearing coastlines" in America and that Chu will utilize "science" to deal with global warming. In other words, we'll be told endlessly that this guy is a "scientist" and therefore his politically-based global warming lies are actually fact. That will be the agenda he is in charge of shoving down the throats of Americans.

He'd better either get a lot of public speaking training immediately or find someone else to do his public speaking for him because he was atrocious at the presser where he was introduced and spoke. It looked like Obama pulled him out of some computer lab somewhere, handed him a couple of pages of text and said, "Go out there on stage with me and read this when I tell you to. Then go back to the lab and find me more lies about global warming so I can promote my green energy agenda. You do that for me and I will see to it that your lab gets all the federal grants you will ever want to further the myth of global warming."
