This sucks (pun intended)....

Nanny state strikes again, along with unfunded mandates.

In theory, great idea. I can see requiring all NEW pools to follow the new guidelines. I can see requiring any pool that undergoes repair/renovation.

I could see if the government took a day's worth of Iraqistan war money and gave it to local governments to fix their pools.

I really don't think the retrofit of existing or new designs is a big deal.

1) Replace existing cover? Pool services do that routinely. Also are options for vacuum triggered bypass/shut off...prices around $600
2) Install and external breaker to shut off pump? Requires installation of relay, concrete pad with box and all weather shut off...maybe $2-3k max. for a commercial pool.
3) Installation of two drains...virtually impossible for existing pools without MAJOR work...but for existing...maybe an addl. $1,200.

What's humorous 'bout this is they're talking about the financial impact to public pools...all of the public pools I know of charge SOMETHING to get in....50 cents to $3 for a day pass...which should be used to manage the retrofit. If they're not charging already, post a sign ASKING CITIZENS TO DONATE $1-5.00 to help pay for the retrofit. I suspect most parent wouldn't mind kicking in a couple of bucks to help make sure the pool's safe for their kid.

You ever worked in local government? Pools already lose money enough money, the last thing they need is additional expense for something stupid. And ask citizens to pay more? You've got to be kidding. Our local pool charges $125 for a summer pass for the entire family and you should hear the people bitch.
