19-yr old who graduated from school across the street from my house made the ultimate sacrifice. Born the same year I graduated from HS....when I think of all the stuff I've experienced since HS....what a shame....

I wish our leaders had to read clippings like that for every death.

A kid I knew and graduated with, but wasn't really friends with, suffered the same fate about a year and a half or so ago. I believe he was only 19 as well. :(

I saw the story on the news this morning. It gives some perspective when it hits closer to home.

Two years ago I was in Brevard, a town of a little over 5,000 people near here, when two representatives from the army came to City Hall and asked directions to a local home. A local young man, I think he was 22, had been killed in Iraq, and they were there to inform the family.

When the body flew into Asheville, an honor guard of biker ex-servicemen escorted it home to Brevard. People lined the highway into town to honor the young man. It literally seemed that everyone in town showed up.

Months later, I had to present at a Public Hearing to City Council. When the meeting opened, the Mayor said that he had a presentation to give a couple sitting near me. They then proceeded to show a video sequencing the events from arrival at the Asheville airport, through the motorcade to Brevard and the funeral. It had been professionally shot by someone interested in the biker escort and then taken by the emotional outpouring of the town residents. It was set to music and very well done. The Mayor gave the couple the video and a plaque from the town to expression appreciation for their son's sacrifice and their loss. I don't think there was a dry eye in the room.
