Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats.

The command's "Joint Operating Environment (JOE 2008)" report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico.

I think the collapse of Pakistan is a much bigger concern. Muslim nation + nuclear power is not a good combination.

Bigger concern from a nuke perspective, but not necessarily bigger concern. Having chaos (or, even WORSE chaos) on our Southern border doesn't bode well. We may have to mine the coastline and put up a guarded fence.

Well, there IS precedent for this. In Harry Turtledove's awesome alternative history series predecated on the South winning the Civil War (which unfortunately culminated in a holocaust through Texas and Louisiana), Mexico flat out SOLD the states of Sonora and Chihuahua (Northern Mexico) to the CSA sometime around the 1880s. The Mexicans from these states served in the CSA Army and had a social status roughly halfway between Caucasians and African-Americans.
