Christianity says, "Bring it pussies".

While derailing a thread is a much appreciated ability here in the Political forum, I have decided to start a thread that is to be full on ugliness (CS.COM Style), for I am tired of interjecting defense of Christianity in other's threads.
I will start this one off and say that Christianity is the best thing to ever happen to the Earth, and without it, the U.S. would not be the power that it is, nor would the World be as advanced.

Christianity is the reason that the Roman Empire fell and the reason that we had a dark ages. It wasn't until scientists grew some balls and stood up to the Church that the Renaissance began.
And while our country was founded by Christians, don't forget: they came here trying to get away from other Christians.

Are you talking about the scientists that practiced in the mud huts, or the ones that started out in the monestaries and then onto Oxford and Cambridge, which were both Christian founded schools?
Or perhaps the fact that Christianity expanded on the idea of an ordered cosmos because it followed the laws that embody the rationality of God the creator.
What dark ages are you referring to?
By the way, thanks for posting (seriously).

Does Christianiaty, or religions in general, even exist in Seattle?

Good question. Seattle is not exactly a hotbed of Christian activity - never has been.

Thank God the Muslins and Chinks kept all of that scientific knowledge from falling into the hands of the barbarous Christians.

Exactly! Good one. If it wasn't for the Christian doofuses, we would be driving to work in spaceships. Can't believe Christianity hates science so much.

Damn science, proving that the Earth wasn't the center of the Universe.

There was no warfare between science and the church. It has been easily discredited as a fabrication by John William Draper and Andrew Dickson White. Both of them have been absolutely trashed as authors on the subject.
If you are referring to Galileo, he was a celebrity and supported by the current Pope and Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (head of the inquisition). Yes the church was at odds with the fact Galileo proposed the Earth revolved around the sun and Galileo kept it to himself for quite awhile. Eventually, he violated his agreement with Bellarmine to keep his beliefs to himself, but in no way was tortured.
Galileo in fact was never charged with heresy, never placed in a dungeon and never tortured. In fact, the church was fine with him continuing his work as long as it didn't relate to heliocentrism.

Galileo did more than just propose a theory.
Galileo published his
Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems which put the church in a tough position. One of his main arguments was wrong. He postulated it was the sun that was responsible for the ocean tides - we know it is the moon.
Secondly, Galileo embarressed the Pope by constructing his "dialogue" in which he referred to the Pope character as Simplicio (simpleton).
Lastly, he advanced his own scriptural interpretations which undermined the Church. This was a period in which the Protestants where attacking the Catholic church for not taking the Bible seriously enough.
Galileo was a church celebrity, they just wouldn't allow him to make them look bad.
Hardly restricting him to non-reality work.

Facts are a bitch, eh?
Facts are, indeed, a bitch. This is 2012, and you apparently aren't aware that the sun impacts the ocean's tides.
In addition, you have no idea of how to support your own positions.

Preventing (delaying, actually) the masses (no pun intended) from learning about the real order of their solar system, which would certainly challenge the Church's ideas about Heaven and Earth's relationship, versus allowing a scientist to write some biting comedy about a church leader. Great trade off for humanity.

If it weren't for Christianity a lot more little boys would be running around with virgin buttholes.
Oh & lets not forget the fact that Christians have traveled this world far & wide to spread the word of Jesus & bring "relief", all while stripping Native Americans, Africans, etc. of their cultures & true identity. Fuck you Christianity.

Before anybody comments on Galileo they have to read all of Stillman Drake's books (the foremost expert on Galileo) otherwise you're talking out your ass like SteattleGriz...
Galileo left detailed notes and information behind regarding the church and the pope
Proceed with caution here - there are actual documented facts that can be admitted into the argument at any point when somebody needs to be slapped down
House Arrest - is the key phrase here

I will start this one off and say that Christianity is the best thing to ever happen to the Earth, and without it, the U.S. would not be the power that it is, nor would the World be as advanced.
Religion comes from the period of human prehistory where nobody—not even the mighty Democritus who concluded that all matter was made from atoms—had the smallest idea what was going on. It comes from the bawling and fearful infancy of our species, and is a babyish attempt to meet our inescapable demand for knowledge (as well as for comfort, reassurance, and other infantile needs). Today the least educated of my children knows much more about the natural order than any of the founders of religion.

We are talking about Galileo's time, not today as far as the Sun's effect is concerned.
As for truncating my thoughts, I am trying to keep it brief. You have given shit for proof champ. Step up and give something useful instead on snippets of bullshit.
Christianity was the foundation of the scientific method. While the Catholic church was heavy handed, it does in no way diminish from Christianity's efforts for discovering the truth.
You are trying to tell me a bunch of science minded guys all got together and started science as we know it? What, did they text each other? How about doing a webex? Nice try.
Classic dude. Classic.

Hitchens doesn't fair too well in his debates against theologians. Not saying he got owned, but to pull a quote out of your ass like you did is WEAK.
By the way, I really liked Hitchens because he brought his A game.

You have proof of this? Please post supporting links that Stillman Drake is the defacto expert on this topic. I see he is an expert, but I can't locate any of his discussions on this matter.
I welcome facts, you know me. I am calling your bluff and I have references to back up my shit.

The statement about cultures is bullshit. Give us some facts to back up that statement.

The acts of pedophilia were committed by men of power inside Christian churches. These priests were left alone with young boys simply because they were "men of God". Then when the truth started coming out, the churches covered it up. Don't act like you don't know about the Catholic church & their love of child rape.
As far as stripping cultures, look no farther than Christian Missionaries here in America & Native Americans. I could find hundreds of articles just like this, oh & they liked to rape Indian children too:

Why couldn't the renaissance have happened in the Arab world, or in India, or China, or in the Aztec, Inca, or Mayan civilizations? Are only white folks endowed by EVOLUTION with the ability to advance science?
The Dark Ages were ended by Christian leaders in Europe and reformers within the Church, by the way.

Wrong. They were left with them because they are trusted, the same way parents trust teachers, coaches, parents of their kid's friends, and many other adults.
