If we are going to spend our way out of this recession, let's spend it on something that (a) creates AMERICAN jobs (b) is a Constitutionally mandated Federal activity (c) will have benefits long into the future and (d) has strong bi-partisian support...

More AMERICAN, jobs, long term benefits, strong bi-partisan support?

Fix the highways, bridges, and transmission grid; much more beneficial for ALL AMERICANS. Not that the F-22 isn't a wonderful aircraft and all that, but it's going to be quite a while before there is a serious challenge to our air superiority. Air superiority that isn't doing much to get us out of our current quagmires last time I read the news.

Gotta agree with dawg on this one....with one tiny caveat: if we wait TOO long to replace our aging aircraft, we could be in a world of hurt.

Already there...

Our tanker fleet is 1959 - 1961 vintage aircraft...costs to maintain grow exponentially each year...

Our B-52 fleet is 1958 - 1960 vintage aircraft...same thing...

F-16s...the majority are 1980 - 1989 vintage...we've flown the wings off them between Desert Storm...Northern and Southern Watch...and all the other "stuff"

F-15s...the majority are 1978 - 1984 vintage...

I understand the infrastructure repair issue...I'm not arguing for one over the other...but if Congress allocates money for highways and bridges and the transmission grid, there won't be many jobs created for about another year to 16 months because of design and bidding regulations...

Keeping/increasing the F-22 line production will create jobs now...

And, those jobs are in 48 of the 50 states, so, cut off the work and just about every state will feel the impact...

F-22s are around a billion dollars a pop, right? Like dawg said, that kind of cash can fix a lot of roads and bridges.

Actually, we SHOULD do both.

But for the daily cost of the Iraqi War, we could replace what - a plane a day?

And Jon, regarding the cost of the war....oh, nevermind. You won't listen anyway.

But for the cost of the bailout we could replace what?

But for the cost of welfare, we could replace what?

But for the cost of government corporate welfare, we could replace what?

This is a fun game, Jon! ;)

If they would send me a million bucks, I would promise to spend it all right here in the good old USA, in less than 6 months.

I would to. Keep some construction workers busy, buy all American made new appliances and furniture, etc.

$150 billion (original stimulus) +$700 billion (banks) + $17 billion (autos) + $835 billion (the newest "stimulus plan") = $5,673 for every man, woman and child in America (assuming 300,000,000 Americans).

I'll take my $23,000 "bailout" and do something REALLY nice with it...I promise....

Lessee here, up grade on the vehicles, need a new motor for my fishing boat, new siding, windows, flooring, and cabinets in the house, nice big new shop out back, a full line of Filson outerwear, trip to Mall Of America for the shopper of the house hold, and give me a little time and I can think of more.

That would be instantly good for the economy would it not?

Why can't we do both? And for that matter, why do we spend more than the rest of the world combined on our military, yet most school districts are barely afloat? I'm all for having a strong military, but we've got to find some sort of balance.

And yes, I realize that education isn't delegated to the fed. government by the Constitution.

Hasn't stopped the federal government from being involved so far.
