UN official: Enough evidence to prosecute Rumsfeld for war c

Monday, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak told CNN's Rick Sanchez that the US has an "obligation" to investigate whether Bush administration officials ordered torture, adding that he believes that there is already enough evidence to prosecute former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
"We have clear evidence," he said. "In our report that we sent to the United Nations, we made it clear that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld clearly authorized torture methods and he was told at that time by Alberto Mora, the legal council of the Navy, 'Mr. Secretary, what you are actual ordering here amounts to torture.' So, there we have the clear evidence that Mr. Rumsfeld knew what he was doing but, nevertheless, he ordered torture."
Asked during an interview with Germany's ZDF television on Jan. 20, Nowak said: "I think the evidence is on the table."
At issue, however, is whether "American law will recognize these forms of torture."

Actually, it was the UN's REFUSAL to hold Saddam ACCOUNTABLE for their VERY OWN resolutions that has led me to the point where they are completely powerless and their beliefs don't mean shit. WE held Sadaam accountable, the UN did NOT. They neutered themselves in the process.
So, D1B can take his mouse trap and shove it where the sun don't shine.

So prior to the US invasion of Iraq you were a big supporter of the UN?
dback's score stands upon review.

Not a BIG supporter, but I did somewhat believe in their mission. Not any more. They screwed the pooch.

Too bad that the guy we SHOULD have held accountable is still running loose and sending us holiday greetings.

Now you're talking about accountability for something completely different. But I agree with you that he should be held accountable. I'm shocked Bush didn't pull him out of a cave somewhere about October 25th of last year.

Too bad he couldn't pull it off, what is it with Bushes getting punked by Arabs anyway? Now the twins will have to finish the job.
Maybe we could offer to trade Rummy for Osama?

Tis a slippery slope guys. We expect our soldiers to be treated by the accords of the Geneva Convention regardless of the circumstances of their capture. That is what we have always done, set the example for the rest of the world. And boy, are we pissed off when any little violation of those principles are violated, by anyone. Video taping the prisoners/hostages, making them sign statements or give statements regarding their "criminal" activities, and our government's "criminal" activities, etc.
And we want heads to roll in the end. Line 'em up, shoot 'em down, hang them, etc.
Now it gets out that we condone torturous treatment when it suits our needs.
Nice, real fvcking nice. Talk to your kids, discourage their involvement in any military service under any and all circumstances. Our government, under these incredible ass-hats have lowered the standard for prisoner treatment and wiped their shitty asses with the aforementioned Geneva Convention, our service people are bones to be chewed if captured, no matter by who.
So much for being the beacon of hope, justice, and liberty for the rest of the world to see. The butchered blood of future U.S. servicemen and women is upon the hands of George W. Bush and company. Our example has been witnessed by the world body.
And, yes fvck the UN, I agree on that, but I also always considered our ethics above the trash of the world. We have just joined them, and there is no longer any high ground to stand on.
Shameful.

Excellent post, Wedgie. The US has lost whatever moral high ground we had.
Heck of a job, Rummie

It was with the greatest reluctance that I discouraged my kids from considering the military when they graduated high school 3 years ago. The time I served was one of the best things that happened to me and there are few who wouldn't benefit from the education. Unfortunately, the behavior of the civilian leadership during the Bush administration has been a black eye to the history of this country and a kick in the nuts to the honor of the services.

This is a good thread. I'm reminded of what Dave Chappelle said in his skit "Black Bush."
"Why don't you [UN] sanction me with your army. OH! You ain't got no army. So, I think you need to shut the fcuk up. SHUT THE FCUK UP!"

You'll change your tune when the black helicopters start showing up. Don't forget to rotate your street signs to confuse the invaders.

Damn, that is funny.
The blue helmets too, they will be one of the seven signs of the impending apocalypse.

Wedgie and Houndawg I have to agree with your posts. As much as I hate to say it. I am still proud of my service and wouldn't trade it for anything, I wouldn't take a million dollars to do it again under W and crew.

We don't have street signs in the boonies where I live. And I'd venture a guess that most people around here are more heavily armed than the UN pussies they'd send in.
