Colombia Rules Gay Couples Must Be Granted Same Rights as St

Post by dbackjon »

In a historic decision handed down Wednesday, Colombia's Constitutional Court ruled same-sex couples must be granted the same rights as heterosexuals in common-law marriages.

The court's decision means Colombia's gay couples will be awarded dozens of rights that straight, unmarried couples have enjoyed for years and follows other recent rulings that have won the nation's same-sex couples inheritance, pension, health, and social security rights.

The Colombian LGBT rights group Colombia Diversa, human rights group Dejusticia, and the Group for Public Interest Rights from the University of the Andes were responsible for the successful suit, filed last April.

Uruguay is the only other Latin American country to recognize same-sex unions. (Neal Broverman, Advocate.com)

And in other breaking news, Mob Boss Pelosi announced that Congress might begin considering signing the 22 year overdue free-trade agreement with Colombia, now that they've paid the ransom requested.

Pelosi and the Democratic leaders are criminals who should be jailed.

That's the problem with supporting big government, it can give you rights and take them away.

Support a more libertarian mindset, and there would be less government "discrimination."

Gay couples in America don't have ANY rights to take away.

And realistically, all the rights that married couples have will never go away.

Making a larger point about big government Jon.

In fact, the government no more grants rights than it takes away (in theory, based on the Constitution). However, the right to government sanctioned marriage was a created right, not an unalienable right. I'm not saying gays cannot marry, but because the government decided to get in the marriage business (and use it to expand it's scope into other personal areas--social security, insurance, etc.) it has caused this issue. You're a big government guy, but think about it. It's big government that is keeping gays from marrying, not REAL small government people like me.

Government should be motivated to better public policy and benefit. Holding the Free Trade Agreement hostage until Pelosi/Leftists could extort some "social engineering" action from a traditionally conservative, Catholic country, is unethical and ultimately ended up hurting both country's economy's during here tenure.
And, if social reform/justice is REALLY that important to the LGBT's, why aren't they speaking out about the atrocities in China?

Oh, yeah...

...it's ok for China govt. soldiers to execute political activists, murder women and children in Tibet, jail any person who challenges a public official, maintain a decades old eugenics policy, and censor all public speech...

...so long as no gay is directly effected.

I'm sure they do, Mr. Clinton, but the leaders of the LGBT have been particularly quiet. If the current (not historical) LGBT battle was genuinely being waged to address civil and human rights disparities/transgressions, then, as with the CRA of the 60's, ALL forms of discrimination must be denounced. Isolating one class for redress, while simultaneously creating another class of oppressed (religious), is illogical.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You cannot "force" another "class" of society into believing and actively supporting a social position they oppose on religious grounds. Nobody will win that battle save for the lawyers, and the war will just continue.
Build a consensus by exemplifying noble leadership, not hate (hint...MLK).
