Updated at 1 p.m. ET: Twenty-six people were killed, including 18 children, when a gunman opened fire in a Connecticut elementary school Friday morning, a law enforcement official said.

The gunman, who is dead, was a 20-year-old from Connecticut, an official said. He was wearing all black and was carrying two 9mm handguns.

The worst school massacre in school history occurred in 1927. A former school board member killed 45 with -- bombs.

Worse tragedy than Columbine. Elementary-school kids...I have two kids around that age, I can't imagine getting that call if it was my school, my kids.

One of the most tragic days in American history without a doubt.

Prayers go out to everyone that goes to that school & that whole community.

Sounds like the guy was 20 years old, from Jersey. The school would not buzz him in. Wacked his kid's entire classroom. Another dude in camouflage was taken into custody but was screaming that he wasn't involved. Will be interesting to see.

I'm guessing there's a women involved in this somewhere. Just early speculation.

.223 cal/5.56 mm is the round used in the M-16. One of the most widely produced rounds in the world today. Used in many sporting/varmint rifles as well.
