Anyone else following this story? 5-year-old girl gets 10 day suspension for suggesting she and a friend shoot each other with a pink bubble gun. She know has to fight to get "making terroristic threads" expunged from her record.

If I didn't know better I'd say this was an Onion article that was mistakenly taken seriously. How could the teacher and the school administrators here be so stupid? :ohno:

Zero-tolerance is ridiculous. I'm going through orientation to become a substitute teacher right now and if I see anything related to a firearm (like a kid drawing a gun...or even playing cowboys), I'm supposed to report them. I won't. I'll explain to them that they shouldn't do it again in school as some idiots (I won't use that word though) might take it more seriously. As I've said before, sometimes the law of common sense should trump written laws. It's not worth ruining a kids life on this nonsense regardless of "training" or "rules."

BTW, "no tolerance" goes against the very nature of raising a normal human being. Pretty much everything about the development of a child/teen requires tolerance.

Now another boy in Massachusetts might be suspended for making a gun out of legos. Is this seriously what passes for keeping kids safe these days? :dunce:

My son is having a Nerf war birthday party next month. Bring your Nerf...er...guns...and have fun...er...shooting/blasting/whatever your friends.

I'm wondering how many parents will go ballistic when they get the invitation...eff them if they do.

What the eff is wrong with this country?
Playtime in school turned problematic for a 5-year-old Massachusetts boy who made a toy gun out of Legos.

Joseph Cardosa is part of the after-school program at Hyannis West Elementary School on Cape Cod. His parents received a letter a few days ago that said Joseph had received his first warning for using toys inappropriately, and that upon a second warning, he will be suspended from the program for two weeks. Joseph’s parents, Shelia Cruz and Octavio Cardosa, say the school is taking things too far.

It's good to see that these people are reacting rationally to the Sandy Hook massacre and not letting emotions cloud their judgement.

Something interesting here. The same people saying Zero Tolerance HERE were after people's heads in other threads involving young ship captains who went aground.

It either goes or it doesn't, folks.

Oh yeah I've been through that. One time my daughter, who had never been in any kind of trouble, wrote "redrum" on her desk. I guess she saw "The Shining." Talk about a big deal. Suspension and so forth. The mother of the girl who sat in the same desk next class and reported it friggin' took her kid out of school.

Maybe part of the fault goes to our having a litigious society. But I think most of it goes to the obsession with eliminating risk. Everybody knows that if somebody goes nuts some day and does something crazy there will be massive focus of 20:20 hindsight. So if some little girl wrote "redrum" on her desk and you didn't come down with both feet YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT COMING!!!!

But it's way out of control. The drug thing too. Like if you kid has allergies you can't give them an allergy pill to take at school. You can't give them a friggin Advil in case they have a headache. It's absolutely ridiculous.

We are a whacked culture. No doubt. We worry about crap like that when there's more risk that our kid will drown in the bathtub while we're not looking than that they'll get killed in something like Newtown.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

7-year-old suspended for throwing imaginary grenade...

Is this what anti gun folks mean when they talk about "addressing the culture of violence"? Making psychopaths and criminals out of boys who like to play soldier?

I figured this thread was the right place for this. My youngest son saw Men In Black and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. He asked to be dressed up for the part. Should I send him to school like this?

Ask my parents. They're old. There's a little carpet mat thrown down between the kitchen and hall. They've also got about 87 cats and dogs.

I met a Mormon chick (from Utah) in SoCal when I was stationed out there and she fucked like she came from a state where they'd kick you out of school for dying your hair auburn. She made rabbits look undersexed.

Don't these folks realize what they're doing to their kids when they repress them?
