Nearly three months after stinging losses at the polls, the Republican Party is starting to seem a bit more like the Democratic Party.
The newly elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, the first African-American ever to hold that position, says his party must do a better job of courting candidates and voters who support gay marriage and are pro-choice.
"I think that's an important opportunity for us, absolutely. Within our party we do have those who have that view," Michael Steele told Fox's Chris Wallace Sunday morning.

His victory incensed former Republican Louisiana State Representative (and former Ku Klux Klan member) David Duke, who called Steele a "racist."
"I am glad these traitorous leaders of the Republican Party appointed this Black racist, affirmative action advocate to the head of the Republican party," Duke told a Washington Post reporter.

"I am glad these traitorous leaders of the Republican Party appointed this Black racist, affirmative action advocate to the head of the Republican party," Duke, still searching for a gig and some validity in this new world of tolerance, women drivers & electricity, told a Washington Post reporter.

I would love for the republican party to loosen up on social issues. I am simply not sure the two distinct conservative groups (fiscal and social) are large enough to win elections by themselves.

Well, I would hope the Fiscals could break away from the Socials.....seems like the Fiscals could bring in voters from the Dems who don't agree with Dem econ policy, but can't stomach the religious right and all-or-nothing stances of either party...like myself...who the fok am I kidding....

No, but there are plenty of socially-liberal/libertarian, fiscally conservative voters to win.

I'm not so sure. Contrary to the tone many people take when speaking of Obama, he ran on a pretty darn fiscally liberal platform and people sucked it up. I wish that was the case that the republican party could be the moderate libertarian party, I just don't think that would swing enough democratic voters to win.
Unfortunately, our system requires a certain pragmatism when it comes to "getting votes". You can see that on both sides.

AS I said, I haven't seen a lot of evidence for the dems not agreeing with the Dem Econ policy. Maybe I spend too much time on these boards

No...you're right....scary thought....the progeny of the baby-boomers-"no-losers"-everyone-gets-a-trophy society has now created a socety of entitlement that the Dem econ policy really caters too.....as opposed to the corporate-entitlement-cheap-illegal-labor-no-regulation society created by Republicans.....hell, just let the terrorists do us in before we do ourselves....

Actually they both cater to the corporations, one of them is just a little quieter about it

No proof of this but I think there is a large group of Americans in the center who gravitate toward the candidate that they feel is closest to what they believe in. It's not a homogenous group, they're in the center for a variety of reasons and what appeals to one might not appeal to another. In the last election, McCain had too much baggage to overcome (Iraq, the economy, Bush and his arrogance, Palin's appeal to the far-right, etc.) while Obama's message (Change) and lack of specific details (which would likely alienate small groups of centrists on each point) was attractive to many of the centrists. IMO, a fiscal conservative would be much more appealling to these centrists and stand a better chance at election than a social conservative.

The largely Republican Legislature in Wyoming voted down an anti same sex marriage bill that was thrust upon them by the likes of Dobson's hate group and other out of state agitators.

Hurray for the Equality State!
Also two exceptionally intrusive anit-abortion bills were disposed of before hitting the floor.
Looks like that even here, in the state that supported McCain some 67% which was the biggest amongst all 50 states, we have gotten the message loud and clear that getting involved with these basic Republican platform issues alienates people and gets in the way of getting the real work done in the legislature.
Thank you my personal friend Rep. Dave Bonner for doing just as I would have if I were in his place in Cheyenne.

Look who else is pushing social bills in Wyoming-

That is good to see in Wyoming, Wedgie - sounds like you have some smart Legislators, both Dem and Rep.
Don't let T-man read that last article - he will condemn you for attacking the Mormons by linking that article.

Thinking of putting forth a bill to outlaw the use of lab rats and mice for scientific experiments. Use of mormons makes much more sense because they breed faster, and you don't get emotionally attached to them.
