Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire abruptly withdrew his nomination as commerce secretary Thursday, citing "irresolvable conflicts" with President Barack Obama's handling of the economic stimulus and 2010 census. "We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy," Gregg said in a statement released by his Senate office.

Gregg, 61, is a former New Hampshire governor who previously served in the House. He has been in the Senate since 1993 and currently serves as the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, where he is known as a crusader against big spending.

Statement from the White House:

"Senator Gregg reached out to the President and offered his name for Secretary of Commerce. He was very clear throughout the interviewing process that despite past disagreements about policies, he would support, embrace, and move forward with the President's agenda. Once it became clear after his nomination that Senator Gregg was not going to be supporting some of President Obama's key economic priorities, it became necessary for Senator Gregg and the Obama administration to part ways. We regret that he has had a change of heart".

"Senator Gregg reached out to the President and offered his name for Secretary of Commerce. He was very clear throughout the interviewing process that despite past disagreements about policies, he would support, embrace, and move forward with the President's agenda. Once it became clear after his nomination that Senator Gregg was not going to lie to cover up the non-stimulus agenda President Obama's administration was attempting to force down America's throats, as well as the Administration's decision to transfer control of the Census directly to the White House where staffers could then manipulate the process to benefit the Democrat party, it became necessary for Senator Gregg and the Obama administration to part ways. We regret that he has integrity".

...reality.

President Obama understands that despite his campaign rhetoric, he and the DNC leaders have absolutely no intention of creating a bipartisan atmosphere, and merely attempt the facade of cooperation to keep voters at bay until after the 2012 elections. In reality, it will be a cold day in Hell when President Obama cedes his overwhelming 2% MOV mandate and actually listens to what the other 48% of America wants. Politics as usual...no surprise. Only difference is who's wearing the crook mask this time around.

Just a curious question:

Is there a quick way to check Gregg's voting record under the Bush administration? I saw him on the news spouting the "I'm a fiscal conservative..." schtick, which would mean he voted against the previous president a vast percentage of the time, yes?

There were very few fiscally conservative Republicans while Bush was in office. It's amazing how many found religion when the new messiah was elected. :x

Yup, we are in for four long years. And I wouldn't get into a hurry getting rid of the penny, that sucker might actually be worth something if this whole mess takes the wrong turn. :phat:

Now if Obama can just resist the temptation of starting a seven year war somewhere around the globe, maybe we won't have to go through rationing and the like. ;)
